Hello Everyone, I have a bit of a poser which, hopefully, someone will be able to help me with. My grandmother - Laura May Vowless - moved to Alice Springs from New Zealand with her daughter in the very early 1940's. Unfortunately, she died not too long after moving there and I am very keen to know where she was buried and also the date of her death. Her maiden name was McKennie and her first married name was Plunkett. I really do not know which one she would have been buried under but I presume it was Vowless. If anyone can put me on the right track I would be extremely grateful. I got on to the Northern Territories' list for a while but I did not have much joy. Thanks for reading. I will be most appreciative of any information - June Johnson
G'day Bill, There are three cemeteries in Alice Springs. The Pioneer Cemetery operated from 1890 until about 1930 The Memorial Cemetery from 1933 to 1995 The Garden Cemetery from 1978 I reckon your grandmother would be in the Memorial Cemetery. The cemetery is administered by the local council. Try to contact them on atsc@atsc.nt.gov.au The Alice Cemeteries are not all that large so there should be no problem finding her under any on e of the names UNLESS her daughter arranged for her remains to be shipped South which is quite often the case as so many locals were "two year tourists" with no real root in the town!
