    3. THe limited tenure (or lease) varies from state to state. NSW does not have it at the moment, but it can be brought in at any time. I don't think Qld has it either yet. THey have tried in NSW from time to time but always seem to back away from it. In some overseas countries it is the way of life (or death). Where they are running out of space, the remains are usually dug up after so many years and reburied in a new, smaller plot and that way the larger original plot can be re-used. 3. In Adelaide the major metro cemeteries (Centennial Park & Enfield) have a 50 year tenure for burials and 25 years for cremains. West Terrace and North Road have 99 year tenure. The country cemeteries don't have the space pressures that the metro cemeteries have. With reuse in S.A. the lift & deepen method is used. The remains are recovered from the grave and boxed (roughly shoe box size) and placed deeper in the original grave. The headstone is removed and usually held until or if claimed by a relative. The grave is then reused with a burial at the normal depth. Don't forget that the headstone or cremation marker is not the property of the cemetery but the property of the family (and ideally should be included in the family insurance policy in case of vandalism). As Charmaine says tenure in many European countries is very limited. More often than not 10 years but sometimes only 5 years!!
