Hi Raymond, I think this is a marvellous idea. Queensland, Toowoomba, (Toowoomba has 2 cemeteries), 1/ Drayton and Toowomba Cem. which is on line through the Toowoomba City Council ( I am not able to visit this one) and 2/ Garden of Rememberance, which I can get to. G'day Family Historians. re Raymonds idea of adding an individual's name and nearest cemetery to a database - it may be more effective to enllist the closest Family History Group who have their own databases of their local cemeteries. G'day Sandra As a member of a local Historical Society we do have a lot of the local cemeteries on our database but we also have to charge for information as it's one of the very few ways we have of raising funds, it's a catch 22 Di > G'day Family Historians. > > re Raymonds idea of adding an individual's name and nearest cemetery > to a database - it may be more effective to enllist the closest > Family History Group who have their own databases of their local > cemeteries. > > Sandra > > > > > >BlankGreetings Members one and all, > > > > > Just a quick note for now, but in the last couple of days we have had > >a large number of new members joining The Australia_Cemeteries List > > > > > As administrator and on behalf of all members of the list I would like > >to wish all new members a very warm welcome from all here at > >Australia_Cemeteries List and hope that you will enjoy your stay with us and > >make many new friends. > > > > > I know that a number of you have been invited to join to help support > >us in this latest issue of Cemeteries to Pioneer Parklands here in Victoria, > >and for that from all the members I wish to sincerely thank each and every > >one of you for the support that has been shown. > > > > > Now I wish to ask another question please from you all? > > > > > I've been thinking that it could be a wise move, if we try to build a > >data base of members as to what area they live in as to any local cemetery > >that would be close to that said member, I would then with your permission > >also get Peter Applebee to add that data base on the Australia Cemeteries > >Web Page so that in the future if someone is looking for help in a certain > >area they could look at the data base and maybe? find a person who lives > >close be that might have the time to help the said member who's in need of > >help in that cemetery? Hi Sandra, Yes it is also a very good idea, my only problem with that is and I'm trying to say this in the nicest way as I do not need to be falling out of favour with anyone. Is that some Family History Groups tend to hold things very close and are not to happy in sharing without a price which is the case with most that hold cemetery records. Having said that a lot of these groups over look the fact that cemetery records are public records & property and unless gazetted have no right in charging for look-ups donations are a different thing maybe I've said to much all ready but the idea in doing the data base is what I said it's a volunteer thing and done freely to help people searching that could be to far away from a certain cemetery or even overseas. Please do not get me wrong I have the greatest respect for Family History Groups and Societies but there are times when they have something given to them in trust to be shared but it's over looked and becomes owned. But as I said, this is only my personal feeling on the matter. "So please, I beg please no flames" your welcome to comment but lets keep to the issue and that is to "build a data base" to help others> Regards, Ray. ~O^O~ ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sandra Langshaw" <slangshaw9@optusnet.com.au> To: <AUSTRALIA-CEMETERIES-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, September 12, 2003 10:35 AM Subject: [[AUS-CEM]] Re: [[AUS-CEM]] WELCOME TO NEW MEMBERS G'day Family Historians. re Raymonds idea of adding an individual's name and nearest cemetery to a database - it may be more effective to enllist the closest Family History Group who have their own databases of their local cemeteries.
