Good Afternoon; Another old Victorian cemetery that I would appreciate any information on. What I have is noted below. KORWEINGUBOORA CEMETERY: * 5 acres, 1 rood, 8 perches was reserved as a cemetery on 5 March 1884. * It was gazetted on 7 March, 1884 [VGG 1884/694] * The cemetery was situated about 16 miles to the north of Ballan and about 200 yards to the west of the Ballan and Daylesford Road. * It is not known if there were any burials in the cemetery. * There were in 1894 about three houses within a quarter of a mile of the cemetery. * In May, 1947 the Victorian Lands Department enquired if the cemetery land could be sold. * in June, 1947 the Health Department noted there were no trustees for the cemetery and the records for the cemetery did not indicate if the cemetery had been used. * In late June, 1947 the Health Department advised the Lands Department there was no objection to the land being sold. * The cemetery was then believed to be closed, but not too sure if this was gazetted. Believed that the land is still crown land and a listed as a cemetery. * Of interest is that a W.W.1 Soldier - Henry George ELVIS was born in Korweinguboora, enlisted September, 1914,served in the 11th Battalion as a Corporal and was Killed in Action: 22-25 July, 1916 at Pozieres, Somme, France. There is no known grave for him. Any help would be greatly appreciated. References: Dept of Human Services Cemetery Unit: Cemtery archive File: H-CEM-631. Not sure about the cemetery but Korweinguboora, which is near Daylesford was a busy timber cutting and milling area at one stage. John Dalziel was an early pioneer at Korweinguboora. He and his daughter, Janet, were granted lots in the Parish of Korweinguboora on the 28th June 1879. John Dalziel was the Barkstead Mill fitter and is said to have been responsible for the conversion of a Garratt steam traction engine to the Anderson's tramway in 1873. He established and ran his own mill on Back Settlement road at the Werribee River in 1888, it was called Toerag after his workers who wound rags on their feet rather than boots. The Dalziel sons and grandsons continued to work in the timber industry in the area for many years. At least one of the family, Nora McMahon nee Dalziel, died at Korweinguboora in 1922 but I can't say if she was buried there or not. There have been other deaths recorded in the area as well as many of births in the late 19th early 20th centuries. There is a book - Neighbours - Towns of Daylesford & District by Norman Darwin that may help. I think the GSV has a copy. Don Sutherland -----Original Message----- From: D.
