I searched the NLA Newspapers online using the "Pyjama Girl" as a search string. Got quite a few hits and interesting information. I found her burial record and very brief data while researching the cemetery and then checked the newspapers for any further information. Great to have the newspapers on line with the National Library of Australia. Will follow it up. Re the Pyjama Girl; yes she is buried in the cemetery. Linda Agostini (nee Platt) aged 29 years, was buried 13 July 1944 in the cemetery. She is in an unmarked grave. Quite a story regarding her death and conviction of her husband, Antonio Agostini. Chris; I would also recommend "Google" for a search. You will get some interesting items. Just use the Pyjama Girl Mystery as a search term. What I found a real pity was that Linda is in an unmarked grave at Preston Cemetery. I had thought that someone/body would have provided a headstone for her. One other interesting burial at Preston was for 14 year old Shirley Collins who was murdered at Mt Martha on 13 September 1953. This was another mystery. I too think it's a travesty that she has no headstone. She was lying in a formaldehyde bath for 10 years unknown, and now lies in an unmarked grave, I think it's cruel. However, I do understand why the government of the day allowed it, she was such a curiosity that I think they didn't want thrill seakers going to her grave. However, having said that, I think enough time is passed that she should be honored, I just wish we could DO it. However, the law states a relative - yes? Regards, Jo.
Thought you might all find this interesting. I find it interesting that the place of Death is near Albury, I thought she was supposed to have been bludgeoned to death in Carlton. Surname: AGOSTINI Given Names: Linda Father: Platt Ernest Mother: Edith Muter WYE Death Place: NEAR ALBURY Age: 28 Age Code: Year: 1934 Reg Number: 6932 Event: D
I agree David, I found a lot of information in The Argus for 8 March 1944. I could only vaguely remember the story. I would have the thought the police either officially or unofficially may have had a whip around for a marker of some sort but possibly with the war still on and Italian feeling running high this was not to be.. Only recently I arranged a simple marker for a family connection at Preston for a very reasonable figure and another contact did something similar for a victim of the Sunshine rail disaster. It strikes me that it would be a good project for the Friends of the Cemetery if there is such a group. I seem to recall reading a chapter in a book about this case. I particularly recall the Howlong Road. It must have been a devastating time for Linda's parents back in Blighty.
