    3. To Garry Batt (or anyone that knows the answer) Question, what version of windows will this work in? Paul in Sydney -----Original Message----- From: australia-cemeteries-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:australia-cemeteries-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Garry Batt Sent: Wednesday, 5 January 2011 2:47 AM To: australia-cemeteries@rootsweb.com Subject: [AUSTRALIA-CEMETERIES] BDM CD's on hard drive Hi Marsha, that seems an overly complicated way of doing things. To put the BDM CD's on my hard drive I just copied them to my hard drive and ran the setup program from there. For example, with the Victorian Pioneer index I created a folder on my second hard drive and named it 1888. It can be on any hard drive on your computer, I just used the second one. The name of the folder isn't important, I just used the upper figure for simplicity. >From the CD I copied the folders :- DATA DIGGER DISK1 DOCS INSTALL MACVICP MASKS and pasted them into the 1888 folder on my hard drive. I then copied the files from the CD :- _INST16.exe _INST32.exe DOSETUP.exe SETUP.exe and pasted them into the same 1888 folder on my hard drive. Remove the CD from your computer and run the SETUP.exe file from your 1888 folder. Follow the instructions on-screen as you go. If it tells you that a file you are installing is older than a file already on your computer and asks you if you want to overwite it click on "NO." This works with all the Victorian BDM CD's, it's probably the same with the ones from other states. Another thing that I do is after I put the programs on my hard drive is to locate the DIGGER folder that the program installs on your C drive. Open it and locate the DIGGER.exe file. Click on this file and drag it down to the "start" button on the lower left of your screen. This places a short cut on your Start menu. It's handy when you want to look something up without closing what you are working on. Without closing your database or whatever you're working on you can click on the "start" button, then the "DIGGER.exe" file and the menu opens. Once you have opened it you can leave it minimised on the Task bar across the bottom of the screen for future use. One of the problems with the Digger CD's is that you can't have two open at once. You must close the one to look at another. Another one is that in the 'Results list' mode the 'new query' icon isn't available. Here endeth the lesson. 3. Digger indexes are pretty straight forward to run from hard drive. KAWARE, etc & the other DOS based indexes can also be run from hard drive, but a little more fiddly - manual updates to ini file and you need to 'subst' (I think that's the command) the folder to a hard drive letter. 1. Re: [AUSTRALIA-CEMETERIES] BDM CD's on hard drive 'Digger' indexes 2nd way to go
    2. Lyn Fogarty
    3. Hi This discussion has been around for a bit... I have never tried to instal Karwan (NSW indexes) to my harddrive...most of the chats have been re the digger indexes.. This is how I have instaled mine and they seem to work fine on either 32 bit Windows 7 or XP. I am no computer guru but I will try to describe how I have set up my cd's to my harddrive on my new 32 bit Windows 7 that I have on my laptop. 1.... I installed the newest cd that I had for digger as per the usual way via setup...if it needed to be validated by Macbeth I did that at that point also. This also created the digger icon on my desktop. 2... I went to the digger folder on my C drive that had been created...found it at C:\digger (you can also find it in the start>find folder..just type in digger) 3... I created a new folder in that folder and named it data. So then I have a folder C:\digger\data 4....I popped the cd I had installed back into the disk reader and opened it up using "view files" option that windows gives you when you put a cd in the disc reader. If that query did not occur I just went to my computer and selected the cd drive to be opened from there so I could look at the files on the cd. The one I wanted was just the data file 5...I opened up the data file and highlighted and copied all of the files. I then pasted those files to my data file in digger that I had created. (into the folder "data" in the digger folder on C drive) 6... And a main point.. I went to the file for the cd that I had installed...say it was the Victorian Edwardian index...in the C:\digger folder on my laptop....these are the files that were installed when you set up the cd in the first instance....eg, so for the Victoria Edwardian cd you look for the file... vicedw.ini which is the configuration setting for the index. Double click on it or right click and open the file. It will open as text. At the bottom of the text is the files "Path" you need to change this from its default(which means it goes looking for your cd reader) to your newly created data file..the path in this case.... DBPath=C:\digger\Data MsgPath=C:\digger\Data **whatever paths are there I changed... Images or DB path or Msg path.. My computer when I open the digger option on my desktop now looks in C:\digger\data folder for all my digger indexes. I did this to all my digger cd's. You do not overwrite any files if asked when you install, and you do not need to separate any of the data that you copy from the digger cd.. The computer knows what to open in your data folder that you have created.. I found it very simple to do...remember when you change the path in the .ini file to go to file and 'save' before closing the window so that the new path details will be kept. I hope you can make sense of the above but I found it very simple to do once I was over my first nervous nelly nerves. In a nutshell...install all cds as normal, open the cd after to view the folders and open its data file and copy and paste those files to the data file you created on your computer...C:\digger\data Paste all files into YOUR new data folder, just dump them in... Then make sure you change the path on the .ini file for the digger index you have installed. Hope I have covered it all.....I then did exactly the same to my main PC which is XP. Now no need to worry about scratches on those expensive cd's. Cheers Lyn
