Please disregard last posting - was not meant for list. Sorry! Jan
Hi June I was just fishing.....or rather curious about the dates. 1930-1970. The online indexes go to 1979 so was wondering why she was advertising a database to 1970? However, our webmaster could take a hint in his electronic publishing from this advice from Garry Batt - "My regional settings in the Contol Panel were set differently to whatever the people who created the file had set theirs at. To my way of thinking this shouldn't affect anything sent to me or downloaded from the net. You should make your files so that everyone sees the same information regardless of settings on their computer." Hi Marsha, I realised what the problem was as soon as I saw it. Peter caught me with this one a while back. My regional settings in the Contol Panel were set differently to whatever the people who created the file had set theirs at. To my way of thinking this shouldn't affect anything sent to me or downloaded from the net. You should make your files so that everyone sees the same information regardless of settings on their computer. We usually mix dates and single years in the one column. Databases don't like this and will scramble them all up. A database expects to find the one type of data in each column whether it be either dates or years but not both. The easiest way around the problem is to format the column as TEXT before entering any data. If you have trouble setting up a database in Excel contact me and we'll work through it. Yours, Garry.
Is there sks who lives near Penola New Cemetery, who would be able to take a photo of her headstone please.Ursula died 14 Aug 1947 Michelle Cook Christchurch,NZ
Hi Jo be a bit careful with that ACT deaths file. The dates are a bit suspect in places. If you go down to Ongley, Arthur Bowden you'll find he died in the 13th month. They've used Excel and a custom format for the dates column d/m/yyyy and it's scrambled all the dates. Anybody out there using Excel as a database are advised to format any columns in which you are going to put dates as TEXT. Excel has big trouble with dates. Excel can't sort dates before 1900 so you may as well format the column as TEXT. Select the column(s) where you want to enter dates. Click on "Format" on the menu bar across the screen, drop down and click on "Cells", in the dialog box that opens up click on "TEXT" and click on OK. Yours, Garry.
The ACT hasn't released any Birth or Marriage indexes for sale. You can access the Death index online: ACT Historical Death Index 1930-1979 http://www.ors.act.gov.au/bdm/WebPages/bdm_deaths.html General information to access ACT BDMs: http://www.ors.act.gov.au/bdm/index.html Maureen in Sydney Anyone know if the ACT has it's BDMs on disc? Also I just found a baby registered 3 times - each under a different surname (same first name) anyone come across that before?
Whilst trolling through looking for some people buried in Ireland I came across this site and thought it might help someone http://www.kabristan.org UK/ the blurb on the front of the page reads "KABRISTAN ARCHIVES is a non-profit making organisation dedicated to preserving memorial inscriptions from graveyards in the west of Ireland and the Indian sub-continent including many which no longer exist. They are presented here in a form which is easily accessible to the family historian. SEARCH or browse through THE KABRISTAN ARCHIVES for your relatives, find the inscription and we will supply either a copy, or the book, or a photograph if we have it for £4 each, or all three for £12 Inc. Postage worldwide. " Hope this helps someone, Cheers, JO
They aren't on cd. It's just an excel file.
