Hi This discussion has been around for a bit... I have never tried to instal Karwan (NSW indexes) to my harddrive...most of the chats have been re the digger indexes.. This is how I have instaled mine and they seem to work fine on either 32 bit Windows 7 or XP. I am no computer guru but I will try to describe how I have set up my cd's to my harddrive on my new 32 bit Windows 7 that I have on my laptop. 1.... I installed the newest cd that I had for digger as per the usual way via setup...if it needed to be validated by Macbeth I did that at that point also. This also created the digger icon on my desktop. 2... I went to the digger folder on my C drive that had been created...found it at C:\digger (you can also find it in the start>find folder..just type in digger) 3... I created a new folder in that folder and named it data. So then I have a folder C:\digger\data 4....I popped the cd I had installed back into the disk reader and opened it up using "view files" option that windows gives you when you put a cd in the disc reader. If that query did not occur I just went to my computer and selected the cd drive to be opened from there so I could look at the files on the cd. The one I wanted was just the data file 5...I opened up the data file and highlighted and copied all of the files. I then pasted those files to my data file in digger that I had created. (into the folder "data" in the digger folder on C drive) 6... And a main point.. I went to the file for the cd that I had installed...say it was the Victorian Edwardian index...in the C:\digger folder on my laptop....these are the files that were installed when you set up the cd in the first instance....eg, so for the Victoria Edwardian cd you look for the file... vicedw.ini which is the configuration setting for the index. Double click on it or right click and open the file. It will open as text. At the bottom of the text is the files "Path" you need to change this from its default(which means it goes looking for your cd reader) to your newly created data file..the path in this case.... DBPath=C:\digger\Data MsgPath=C:\digger\Data **whatever paths are there I changed... Images or DB path or Msg path.. My computer when I open the digger option on my desktop now looks in C:\digger\data folder for all my digger indexes. I did this to all my digger cd's. You do not overwrite any files if asked when you install, and you do not need to separate any of the data that you copy from the digger cd.. The computer knows what to open in your data folder that you have created.. I found it very simple to do...remember when you change the path in the .ini file to go to file and 'save' before closing the window so that the new path details will be kept. I hope you can make sense of the above but I found it very simple to do once I was over my first nervous nelly nerves. In a nutshell...install all cds as normal, open the cd after to view the folders and open its data file and copy and paste those files to the data file you created on your computer...C:\digger\data Paste all files into YOUR new data folder, just dump them in... Then make sure you change the path on the .ini file for the digger index you have installed. Hope I have covered it all.....I then did exactly the same to my main PC which is XP. Now no need to worry about scratches on those expensive cd's. Cheers Lyn
Hi Ian, Yes the DIGGER ones are great, I was wondering whether someone is trying to install a DOS cd usning DIGGER set up. I have the death certificate here for John MARTIN who was buried 1883 at PORTLAND if you require a copy as proof for correct data. Dorne. To Garry Batt (or anyone that knows the answer) Question, what version of windows will this work in? Paul in Sydney -----Original Message----- From: australia-cemeteries-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:australia-cemeteries-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Garry Batt Sent: Wednesday, 5 January 2011 2:47 AM To: australia-cemeteries@rootsweb.com Subject: [AUSTRALIA-CEMETERIES] BDM CD's on hard drive Hi Marsha, that seems an overly complicated way of doing things. To put the BDM CD's on my hard drive I just copied them to my hard drive and ran the setup program from there. For example, with the Victorian Pioneer index I created a folder on my second hard drive and named it 1888. It can be on any hard drive on your computer, I just used the second one. The name of the folder isn't important, I just used the upper figure for simplicity. >From the CD I copied the folders :- DATA DIGGER DISK1 DOCS INSTALL MACVICP MASKS and pasted them into the 1888 folder on my hard drive. I then copied the files from the CD :- _INST16.exe _INST32.exe DOSETUP.exe SETUP.exe and pasted them into the same 1888 folder on my hard drive. Remove the CD from your computer and run the SETUP.exe file from your 1888 folder. Follow the instructions on-screen as you go. If it tells you that a file you are installing is older than a file already on your computer and asks you if you want to overwite it click on "NO." This works with all the Victorian BDM CD's, it's probably the same with the ones from other states. Another thing that I do is after I put the programs on my hard drive is to locate the DIGGER folder that the program installs on your C drive. Open it and locate the DIGGER.exe file. Click on this file and drag it down to the "start" button on the lower left of your screen. This places a short cut on your Start menu. It's handy when you want to look something up without closing what you are working on. Without closing your database or whatever you're working on you can click on the "start" button, then the "DIGGER.exe" file and the menu opens. Once you have opened it you can leave it minimised on the Task bar across the bottom of the screen for future use. One of the problems with the Digger CD's is that you can't have two open at once. You must close the one to look at another. Another one is that in the 'Results list' mode the 'new query' icon isn't available. Here endeth the lesson. Good afternoon all, Apologies for sending this to the list, e-mails to the addy online simply refuse to "send". Hopefully you can solve a problem, there has been discussion as the whether or not SLIPPERY CREEK Cemetery, NEW SOUTH WALES is all Roman Catholic burials or not. My cousin has sent a query (below) for help in finding Hannah JUDD's burial at SLIPPERY CREEK, the JUDDs were Church Of England, could someone kindly please advise if they are not buried there where we might find their resting place? TIA Regards, Dorne. Hannah died 23-3-1842 at O'CONNELL PLAINS, N.S.W. The only reference I have found regarding her burial is 26-3-1842 at SLIPPERY CREEK C. of E. Cemetery, HAZELGROVE, N.S.W. This date is probably correct but there is no SLIPPERY CREEK C. of E. because the entire cemetery is Roman Catholic. I am trying to find out where Thomas and Hannah are buried and would appreciate any input please? Thomas JUDD was born c.1791 ESSEX, ENGLAND, tried at ESSEX 1818 and arrived SYDNEY, N.S.W. as convict 1821 aboard "Hindostan." Hannah SLANEY was born about 1815 LONDON, ENGLAND, tried at MIDDLESEX, ENGLAND 1832 and arrived SYDNEY, N.S.W. as convict 1833 aboard "Fanny 2" They married 1833 at BATHURST, N.S.W. and had 5 children. Thomas died 17-7-1876 at TARANA, N.S.W. and the most likely place he would be buried is the TARANA/MUTTON FALLS C. of E. Cemetery but no headstone exists there. Dorne Phefley SAUNDERS (AUSTRALIA) Dornes1@bigpond.com

The State Library of Queensland is urging the state’s flood affected residents and business owners to take some simple steps before throwing out damaged photographs, books, papers, videos and cassette tapes. State Library Manager of Collection Preservation Grant Collins said the key to salvaging as many items as possible is “don’t panic” and start with the most valuable. “It can be an emotional time, and people may throw out cherished and irreplaceable possessions damaged by water,” Mr Collins said. “However, in some cases they can be saved by washing mud and silt off with clean water, and careful drying.” A Salvaging Water Damaged Collections fact sheet offers simple, home based solutions for preserving books, documents, photographs, films, tapes, and digital media. “In many cases all you’ll need is a kitchen table, pedestal fan, some absorbent paper, a clothesline and following the basic process in the fact sheet,” Mr Collins said. “It’s important to prioritise based on deterioration time. We recommend people start with photographs and film, and move on to any paper documents and digital media.” “Wet paper can be held over for recovery just by popping it into a freezer, in a plastic bag, within 48 hours. Freezing is the best way to buy time as it reduces the risk of mould outbreak,” he said. “If no electricity is available, you may have to reassess your priorities based on the documents you feel most attached to.” “The key to recovering most of these documents is to get them dry as quickly as possible.” Tips for drying include pegging film and paper on an internal clothesline, using pedestal fans, lying loose papers flat on paper towel, and separating pages of books, and magazines. Advice on how to rescue water damaged collections can be found on the State Library of Queensland’s Preservation webpage www.slq.qld.gov.au/services/pres/advice. Hi Shirlee, Thank you, we did find an 1883 Probate for a John MARTIN (death date 2nd August 1883) that names an Alexander MARTIN but I am still wanting to find out who the John MARTIN (supposedly died 31st July 1888) is that is buried with Sarah MARTIN; maybe it is one and the same fellow with the date and / or year of his death incorrect on the Probate and cemetery cd; may have to leave this query until we can find out more about John MARTIN. Thank you everyone for you help with this query. Regards, Dorne.
