    2. I have a daughter, not my husband's, but adopted by him. Does that mean she is not part of 'our' family and does not share sibings. Nah. I also 'took in' my husband's little sister. Her mum died when she was under 2 years old. I was married to the oldest son so we were the obvious choice for the looker-afterers. Her dad could not cope at the time, and then died himself. I have listed her biological parents, as 'parents' and us as guardians. A can of worms, but still you might just as well write what is correct as what is incorrect. You never know if blood donations may be wanted or other health needs later on. There is no way I could donate anything, I have no blood ties with this child at all, and unless people know that, they may think I am being mean not to give. robyndehood.- ----- Original Message ----- From: "Brian & Sandra Magee" <sanbri@optusnet.com.au> To: <AUSTRALIA-CEMETERIES-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, April 12, 2003 7:13 AM Subject: [[AUS-CEM]] Re: [[AUS-CEM]] Re: [[AUS-CEM]] What to do? > I do my research working on the idea it is family history therefore whoever > was part of the family was part of the history. 3. Hi Michelle, I have the same problem with Wickham and Caughlan, albeit under slightly different circumstances. Historically, it would pay off to follow both lines, as time and funds permit, simply based on your premise of accuracy. This is a huge jigsaw that each of us is part of, and the clearer the image on each piece, the more beneficial things will be for those who follow; and the more secure we will feel, in our own history. That is not to mention the challenges and interesting discoveries that await. In my own search, for example, there is an intimation (only, at this time) that both lines may have followed the various global gold discoveries during the 1800's; subsequently following unassociated parallel paths for some time. I would imagine, however, that there will be some commentary about the desire for familial and adoptive issues and associations to remain well managed. This, due to the associated emotional stakes and, dare I say it: attitudes. I definitely support research in both lines. 3. I do my research working on the idea it is family history therefore whoever was part of the family was part of the history. Without DNA testing who are we to know who is a blood relative. Lots of strange things happened the farther back you go. And we have all heard of the story of a parent rearing a daughter's illegitimate child as their own. I think you just keep it honest if you have found the child name change put it in the notes. And remember they decided who their family was. Then continue on with your other members of the family in the direct line. I would keep to the child's descendants in that case (and later go back if you ever get time to his parentage). For the sake of sanity I just get *spouses* parents but if I had stopped at only males I would have missed out on a wealth of info. After all males and females share parents and grandparents and I want as many photos stories etc as I can get to make up the whole picture not just a list of names. And being female does that mean when I married I ceased to belong to that family or to its heritage as did my children? I think it is the choice of the researcher but I don't know about yours I have found my fellow researchers were mostly female (OK - not all fellows - I know some of you do too <grin>)who do not share my original name any more and they would not be in contact with me either. Perish the thought. I guess to stick to one name study you would have to stick to surname only in the final tree but don't envy the researcher trying to find info w/o the lateral thinking. Guess in the final outcome it is up to you. 3. Yep, I started my tree with only my paternal line in mind and as a mere male didn't give much thought to t'other side. Having matured (aged another five years) decided that the women of the world and the rakes and those unfortunate young domestics whom were 'victims of the times' all had a place in my 'tree'. I use Family Tree Maker V10 and it caters for any relationship and allows you to 'hide' individuals from sensitive eyes when printing details. Leave the 'blood lines' to those that study genetics, we study people. 3. Hello Michelle, et al, There are 3 CDs (available separately) covering NSW BDM indexes. 1 1788-1888 Pioneer Index of BDM 2 1889-1918 Federation Index of BDM 3 1919-1945 Between the Wars Index of DM (no birth) Off the top of my head I can't remember the exact cost of but it is around $A250 each. Good value really if you have heaps of rellies in NSW and don't have easy access to other sources. The CDs will give a little more than the on-line version, but not much. You will get for births and deaths: Surname Given Name(s) Father's name (but probably you won't get this on illegitimate births) Mother's name (not including the surname) Year of birth Year of registration Registration Place (which is not always the exact place of birth, but the registration area) Registration Number Note: don't always count on having the parent names provided in the case of a death - there are just too many where the parents' names are not known. Generally, if the parent name is not on the index, it won't be on any certificate you may order. For marriages Surname Given Name(s) Spouse surname Spouse given name Year of marriage Year of registration Registration Place (as above) Registration Number For pre 1856 entries (i.e., pre-civil registration of births, deaths, marriages, when all was church records of baptism, burial and marriage) you will get quite often a denomination and/or parish I don't know about the "best" place to buy them, but you could try: Informit, Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (who produced them). I don't have a web address for them (I bought my copy pre-internet days and the instruction booklet doesn't list same) Can probably be bought from Goulds Genealogy in Adelaide www.gould.com.au/ I think - although the web address may have changed. Can be bought from Society of Australian Genealogists, Kent Street, Sydney www.sag.org.au/ I think that's it - if I've forgotten anything I'm sure someone else will remember and let you know.
