Hi All, Lynette, I enjoyed reading you account of the Broken Hill visits. I have a few genealogical loose-ends there, but I am not yet ready to try doing them up. >Nothing like it anywhere in the world unless I'm mistaken. I'm afraid you are - mistaken, that is. I spent my teenage years in Kalgoorlie W.A.. Years later I visited Queenstown in Tasmania. I couldn't believe how similar the two places were. It felt like going home! And many further years later, I visited Broken Hill. The similarity with Kalgoorlie was even more striking. I have since been to old (and new) Leigh Creek, and more recently to Coober Pedy - hope I've spelled these correctly - and had the same feeling. Conclusion; remote Australian mining towns look alike. (And it wouldn't surprise me to find many places in other parts of the world that feel just as 'homely', to those of us who grew up in such environs.) You've re-whetted my appetite for investigating that line of my mob, whose remains are now below the red dust of B.H.. Tom, Hobart

Karen - I have the Boroondara Cemetery index on microfiche but sad to tell its indexed by surname and page number only. With over 50 KELLY entries it would take a fair time to check each and every one to see if yours are shown, but if you're prepared to be patient I'll see what I can do. Hi List Does anyone have the lists for the Boroondara Cemetery in Kew Victoria. I am looking for - Andrew Kelly born 1855 Sale Victoria died 1884 Hotham West Victoria. John Kelly born 1856 Campbells Creek Victoria died 1877 place unkown. Parents are John Kelly & Mary Sullivan who are buried at Boroondara with their eldest daughter Sarah Ann Gorman. Thanks in advance. Regards Karen
Hello to those interested in Broken Hill Cemetery. I have researched my family from Broken Hill and the Local Council will provide you with the details of your family members for a cost - about $25 from memory and will provide you with a map. The local family history group don't have the records (or didn't last year) but I'm not sure what the corporation being spoken of is or where their records come from. I was going to visit the area and just had to have the info, so payed the cost. They are the only local council I've ever contacted who charged me for lookup information. I've since been to Broken Hill and if you are looking for the really old graves, ie. from the settlement of Broken Hill in the 1880's, you will find very few grave locations at all, headstones or base locations, it is all dust except for a few. I photographed my 2 x great grandmother's general burial area (died 1888) from all angles, so if you want to see what the area looks like, I will happily send you copies of the area off list. Glad to offer any other Broken Hill insights off list also. Loved the place - very different, very unique, but fascinating. Nothing like it anywhere in the world unless I'm mistaken. More recent graves I found all my family members, meaning 1930's and onward towards today, it is just the very old section which has been literally eroded away from the strong and dusty winds that rip right through the graveyard. Hi Gary, Your question is a hard one to answer because the list is designed to help people find family members, but in many cases we are not able to find a single person owning to the fact that we do not have all registers on line, and this is a very large project and one that will be on going for many years what we try to do is to help people find cemeteries and put then in contact with the said cemetery if we are not able to have such registers listed on one our web page. Which can be found at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~batman/ Then if you go to N.S.W. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~batman/nsw/index.htm Then if you go to "B" http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~batman/nsw/nsw1.htm#anchor6501 and look for Broken Hill, sadly you will see that we do not have any information for Broken Hill as yet, sorry but I have some good new not only for you personally but for the rest of the members as well, because of your inquiry today I have made contact with Broken Hill and right now I'm waiting for then to get back to me with information that we can list on our web page not only for your self but anyone else who wishes to find information in Broken Hill! BTW do any of your BOX family come from Victoria as our old Family Doctor used to be Dr. H. Box of Footscray, he also had a brother who was also a Dr, Dr. William Box Regards, Ray. I would just like to advise the enquirer on Broken Hill cemetery that there are more people in that cemetery than presently live in Broken Hill Its a massive size, I know I have ancestors buried there. Also that there are literally thousands of burial sites which DO NOT have headstones. The Broken Hill corporation are very helpful and have all the details on a database and an email to them gets a return email with the relevant details on your person IF they are actually buried there. If you actually go to the cemetery be armed with the map from the corporation AND even discuss with the person on the fiirst floor who keeps the database up to date actual location as the cemetery is a little hard to work out where things are located in certain sections. regards Ralph ----- Original Message ----- From: "Raymond W Henderson" <batie@bigpond.net.au> To: <AUSTRALIA-CEMETERIES-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, August 18, 2003 12:56 PM Subject: [[AUS-CEM]] Re: Box Family Tree > Hi Gary, > Your question is a hard one to answer because the list is > designed to help people find family members, but in many cases we are not > able to find a single person owning to the fact that we do not have all > registers on line, and this is a very large project and one that will be on > going for many years what we try to do is to help people find cemeteries and > put then in contact with the said cemetery if we are not able to have such > registers listed on one our web page. > Which can be found at > > http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~batman/ > > Then if you go to N.S.W. > > http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~batman/nsw/index.htm > > Then if you go to "B" > > http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~batman/nsw/nsw1.htm#anchor6501 > > > and look for Broken Hill, sadly you will see that we do not have any > information for Broken Hill as yet, sorry but I have some good new not only > for you personally but for the rest of the members as well, because of your > inquiry today I have made contact with Broken Hill and right now I'm waiting > for then to get back to me with information that we can list on our web page > not only for your self but anyone else who wishes to find information in > Broken Hill! > > BTW do any of your BOX family come from Victoria as our old Family Doctor > used to be Dr. H.
