    1. [[AUS-CEM]] Vietnam War Graves - Response
    2. Ice_Man
    3. Thanks everyone for being so supportive of my project to photograph all war graves for those who lost their life due to the Vietnam Conflict. The RAAF in Butterworth, Malaysia have been in contact with me and they have a volunteer to photograph the graves located in that country. Word is spreading and it's great. I have received photographs within two days of my original posting which only proves that a lot of people really would like to see something like this on the Internet. I am tackling Korea, Malayan Conflict and Malaysia/Borneo at the same time but will concentrate on Vietnam most of the time. I will be away, if they don't change my plans again,. Friday 19th sept. for approx 4-5 weeks. During that time my e-mail will not be answered so please be patient with me if you have any questions after that time. Thanks once again. Regards, Brett Prentice Brisbane

Freeman, Sarah Ann 49 Years 27 November 1984 The Memorial Inscription reads as follows Freeman, Sarah Ann In loving remembrance of my dear wife, Sarah Ann Freeman who met her death by accident on 27th Nov. 1894. Born at Wells, Somersetshire, England on 28th March 1845, aged 49years, leaving seven children to mourn her loss. There is no financial gain and the only support I receive is a helping hand with information from the Office of Australian War Graves. I have struggled with some of the cemetery trusts, i.e. Brisbane City Council wanted to charge me $5 for each look-up and I had 29 to complete, so yesterday I spent my time off walking the cemetery (2) row by row until I found the ones I needed and took the photo. They're not all that hard but as you have all had experience you may be better at this than me. > > I go away for 5 weeks this coming Friday so with little time I cannot provide a lot of information, suffice to say I have the names and cemeteries, just not the actual locations. My request is a simple one although I do know how difficult the job can be of photographing graves. My request is such, are there people out there who own a digital camera, have a little spare time that would be interested in assisting me with this project. I have generally found most large cemeteries have a war graves section although smaller cemeteries probably a little more difficult. At this stage I have secured the assistance of photographers in Tasmania (should be complete very shortly), although I am still looking for people throughout the country that can help. I guess my only reward to anyone that helps is to display their name as an active contributor to the project. If you would like further information, please contact me off-line and I shall give you a few further details. 1. [[AUS-CEM]] Vietnam War Graves - Seeking Volunteers to assist with Photography
    2. Ice_Man
    3. Hi, I have run this request by the List Owner, Ray Henderson, who has kindly given me the go ahead. I have recently decided to volunteer and co-ordinate and set-up an on-line database (pictorial) that shows the grave of every Australian Serviceman (Army, RAAF and RAN), that were killed or died in relation to the Vietnam Conflict. In total there are 540 official war graves, most of these located in Australia. The RAAF has offered their assistance by finding a volunteer serving at Butterworth, Malaysia to photograph the various graves located in that country. I have been searching for volunteers, mostly people I know and in some cases another mailing list, but I felt this list should have been where I started. My request is a simple one although I do know how difficult the job can be of photographing graves. My request is such, are there people out there who own a digital camera, have a little spare time that would be interested in assisting me with this project. 1. [[AUS-CEM]] [[AUS-CEM]] Cemetery to Parkland
    2. Chris Ward
    3. In Adelaide the major metro cemeteries (Centennial Park & Enfield) have a 50 year tenure for burials and 25 years for cremains. West Terrace and North Road have 99 year tenure. The country cemeteries don't have the space pressures that the metro cemeteries have. With reuse in S.A. the lift & deepen method is used. The remains are recovered from the grave and boxed (roughly shoe box size) and placed deeper in the original grave. The headstone is removed and usually held until or if claimed by a relative. The grave is then reused with a burial at the normal depth. Don't forget that the headstone or cremation marker is not the property of the cemetery but the property of the family (and ideally should be included in the family insurance policy in case of vandalism). As Charmaine says tenure in many European countries is very limited. More often than not 10 years but sometimes only 5 years!! In some overseas countries it is the way of life (or death). Where they are running out of space, the remains are usually dug up after so many years and reburied in a new, smaller plot and that way the larger original plot can be re-used.
