Hi Janet, We have a lot of little cemeteries around Perth. There is one Albany Hwy, Cannington, if you want I can ring Canning Council tomorrow and check whether I can go into it as the gates are normally closed. Also there is an old cemetery in Wellington St, E. Perth. I will be going close by there next Monday if you want me to have a look. Can't help with Coolgardie though sorry. (it is about 5 hours away). ;o-) Colleen ----- Original Message ----- From: "Janet & Warren" <janwar17@tpg.com.au> To: <AUSTRALIA-CEMETERIES-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, September 16, 2003 2:21 PM Subject: [[AUS-CEM]] Thomas BURGESS > I have found 4 Thomas BURGESS'. I have found 4 Thomas BURGESS'. I now need to know which one is in my family tree. I am hoping someone on this site could do a gravesite lookup to determine the right one. 1921 - Burgess, Thomas M - Canning 1928 - Burgess, Thomas - E, Coolgardie 1936 - Burgess, Thomas - Wellington 1950 - Burgess, Thomas - Perth I know he was born 7/11/1860, which could mean the middle two Thomas' could be a possibility. The last Thomas, bit suspect, meant he was 90 when he died. The first Thomas the initial "M" doesn't come in anywhere on my paperwork. I know his wife's name was Selina Jane BURGESS, hoping this might be on the memorial. I also have two of his sons names, Oliver Stanley Allen and James Ernest. His parents names were Robert and Mary Ann BURGESS, nee HARRIS. I don't know where Canning, E. Coolgardie or Wellington are, as I live in Qld. Thank you in advance. Janet, Logan Village, Qld.
Hi Robin, Thank you so much for your interest with this. I'll try and help you step by step as to what you need to know to help a person find the details of a grave within a cemetery. Firstly you need to try and get as much information of the person requesting the "Look-Up" This would then depend on the next step you need to do? Also many Cemeteries will have what is known as a Sextons map of the cemetery lay-out it could help you in the future to see if you could get a copy for future locations of graves within the same cemetery, and if people are able to obtain sextons maps of cemeteries it could help if a copy could be forwarded on to us, so that we can put them on the web page, example being Warrnambool in Victoria, please see? So at the worst lets say that the person can only give you the persons name and the year. You then would have to either contact the cemetery, it's a good idea at this stage to let the cemetery know that you are a volunteer, otherwise in some cases you could be charged for the information you need, but in most cases cemeteries are not that bed to deal with. So you give the name and the known year of death, then you ask if they could give you the details, what was the actual date of burial, what is the section number, what is the plot number, what religion of the person if known, and are there any other persons in the said grave if so get all the names and dates, and in some cases the cemetery will also be able to tell you who the Undertakes were, and if your really lucky they could be able to tell you if a headstone is in place over the grave, if there isn't any headstone then there is not point in making the trip to the cemetery. Important note:- We you first make contact with the person you need to make it clear that if there are any charges to you, you would appreciate out of pocket expenses? Hope this help and to other members you might like to keep this somewhere as to a guide to also help keep it uniform. Hi Dorne, Life is not simple is it - sometimes I answer an email a little too quickly ;( I really should read the thread and gain the inspiration of good ideas more completely. Going "physically" to a FHG is also out for me like you I am physically challenged, and my beloved hubby does a great job in caring for me. I guess I was thinking about the wonderful help I got from a recently found relative in a FHG whose page I found on the internety, so it was the internet I was thinki9ng about... than as I watched the flood of responses to Ray's suggestion.... I found myself changing my mind. :) and yes I agree Ray will be busy I hope he gets some helpers beside him. have a great day and my regards to your Mum :) Sandra >THIS MESSAGE DOES NOT CONTAIN AN ATTACHMENT > >Hi Sandra & Listers, >Going to a Family History Group is all good and well unless you are disabled >in some way. >I am on a disability pension and also care for my invalid mother. >To get to a FHS is not an option for me. >I feel Raymond's idea of an online database is excellent and with so many >willing helpers, it should do well (Raymond may not have much sleep for a >while though <G>) >Take care. >All the best, >Dorne. > >Dorne Saunders (Australia) >dornes@ozemail.com.au >*GENEALOGY LOOKUPS* >- putting families together - >ANTI VIRUS INSTALLED >******************************* >----- Original Message ----- >From: "Sandra Langshaw" <slangshaw9@optusnet.com.au> >To: <AUSTRALIA-CEMETERIES-L@rootsweb.com> >Sent: Friday, September 12, 2003 10:35 AM >Subject: [[AUS-CEM]] Re: [[AUS-CEM]] WELCOME TO NEW MEMBERS > > >> G'day Family Historians. >> >> re Raymonds idea of adding an individual's name and nearest cemetery >> to a database - it may be more effective to enllist the closest >> Family History Group who have their own databases of their local >> cemeteries. >> >> Sandra > > > >==== AUSTRALIA-CEMETERIES Mailing List ==== >================================================================== >Cemetery Records on line:- >http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~batman/ >================================================================== >http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl?list=AUSTRALIA-CEMETERIES > >============================== >To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy >records, go to: >http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237
G'day Bill, There are three cemeteries in Alice Springs. The Pioneer Cemetery operated from 1890 until about 1930 The Memorial Cemetery from 1933 to 1995 The Garden Cemetery from 1978 I reckon your grandmother would be in the Memorial Cemetery. The cemetery is administered by the local council. Try to contact them on atsc@atsc.nt.gov.au The Alice Cemeteries are not all that large so there should be no problem finding her under any on e of the names UNLESS her daughter arranged for her remains to be shipped South which is quite often the case as so many locals were "two year tourists" with no real root in the town! Hi all, Well, it is great to see such interest in our project, and our list growing to such levels. For those of you that have volunteered to do look ups, will receive email from the web site with subject: as above. The cemetery that you have volunteered to do lookups for will have a Mailto: link to your address. So we really do need to know what specific cemeteries you are able to do, rather than a general area. I am in Adelaide and Ray and Robynne are in Melbourne, we are not necessarily familiar with your area. Having said that we welcome people who can pick holes in our cemetery list on the site, so please check those in your area are on it, or not and let us know. I will also put a list of volunteers in a link just of the front page perhaps a new button or under the mailing list support, give name, town, email address, etc for each volunteer. Existing volunteers will be included in this as well. This is going to take some time to put in place. I must at this point also acknowledge the work of Jill Blackmore and Carol Riley, who have past on to us transcripts and photos of several rural Western Australia cemeteries. We are happy to have them on board, and they have more in the pipeline. Keep up those trips, girls. Dennis and Pam Parker, for their single minded focus on the Peterborough cemetery here in S.A, they have organized "A Back to Peterborough" weekend just to get data on their cemetery. We wish them every success.
