By the same token, that's not always a bad idea. I have read reply emails, and wondered what on earth they were talking about, and if I'd missed some. Thanks Ray, you've been very helpful. I can put my name down to do Beenleigh & Eagleby Cemeteries. Regards Robin ----- Original Message ----- From: "Raymond W Henderson" <batie@bigpond.net.au> To: <AUSTRALIA-CEMETERIES-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, September 16, 2003 10:35 AM Subject: [[AUS-CEM]] Re: [[AUS-CEM]] Re: [[AUS-CEM]] Australian Cemeteries Look Up Please. Hi Robin, Thank you so much for your interest with this. I'll try and help you step by step as to what you need to know to help a person find the details of a grave within a cemetery. Firstly you need to try and get as much information of the person requesting the "Look-Up" This would then depend on the next step you need to do? Also many Cemeteries will have what is known as a Sextons map of the cemetery lay-out it could help you in the future to see if you could get a copy for future locations of graves within the same cemetery, and if people are able to obtain sextons maps of cemeteries it could help if a copy could be forwarded on to us, so that we can put them on the web page, example being Warrnambool in Victoria, please see? So at the worst lets say that the person can only give you the persons name and the year. You then would have to either contact the cemetery, it's a good idea at this stage to let the cemetery know that you are a volunteer, otherwise in some cases you could be charged for the information you need, but in most cases cemeteries are not that bed to deal with. So you give the name and the known year of death, then you ask if they could give you the details, what was the actual date of burial, what is the section number, what is the plot number, what religion of the person if known, and are there any other persons in the said grave if so get all the names and dates, and in some cases the cemetery will also be able to tell you who the Undertakes were, and if your really lucky they could be able to tell you if a headstone is in place over the grave, if there isn't any headstone then there is not point in making the trip to the cemetery. Important note:- We you first make contact with the person you need to make it clear that if there are any charges to you, you would appreciate out of pocket expenses? Hope this help and to other members you might like to keep this somewhere as to a guide to also help keep it uniform. Could someone explain a little more about the steps involved? Would I have to contact the local council or cemetery first to get details of the grave? I have several cemeteries with in a half-hour's drive. I have a digital camera. I would have to go find the exact names of the cemeteries. Hi all, Well, it is great to see such interest in our project, and our list growing to such levels. For those of you that have volunteered to do look ups, will receive email from the web site with subject: as above. The cemetery that you have volunteered to do lookups for will have a Mailto: link to your address. So we really do need to know what specific cemeteries you are able to do, rather than a general area. I am in Adelaide and Ray and Robynne are in Melbourne, we are not necessarily familiar with your area. Having said that we welcome people who can pick holes in our cemetery list on the site, so please check those in your area are on it, or not and let us know. I will also put a list of volunteers in a link just of the front page perhaps a new button or under the mailing list support, give name, town, email address, etc for each volunteer. Existing volunteers will be included in this as well. This is going to take some time to put in place. I must at this point also acknowledge the work of Jill Blackmore and Carol Riley, who have past on to us transcripts and photos of several rural Western Australia cemeteries. We are happy to have them on board, and they have more in the pipeline. Keep up those trips, girls. Dennis and Pam Parker, for their single minded focus on the Peterborough cemetery here in S.A, they have organized "A Back to Peterborough" weekend just to get data on their cemetery. We wish them every success. It may or may not have something to do with the fact that when you hit 'reply all', it puts in two lots of "AUSTRALIA-CEMETERIES-L@rootsweb.com AUSTRALIA-CEMETERIES-L@rootsweb.com" (and I only copied one, I had to take one out, or it would have sent two.) When all the digests come in from various sites, it is easy to skim down the addresses and note the topics to find if they are relevant to names etc I am researching. Sometimes digests come in with up to 20 mails plus other digests coming in with the same number. Of the 20 or so Rootsweb.com lists I subscribe to, the Aust Cem one appears the be the only one with the 'double' address. Does anyone else find this a problem and is there a solution? Hi everyone, I would just like to say thank-you once again for the continued list of volunteers willing to assist with the on-line database for Australian War Graves for those killed during the Vietnam Conflict. There are approx. 520 graves scattered around Australian and Malaysia (covered) and I am still seeking volunteers for Western Australia. Any assistance is appreciated, whether it is a photograph or location of the actual grave. As for me, I will be leaving for training this coming Friday and will be gone from anywhere between 4-6 weeks. Puts a little dampener on things but if anyone would like to help and needs the information before I leave, please contact me off-line on ice_man@tpg.com.au Thanks, Brett Prentice Brisbane
