    1. [AUSTRALIA-CEMETERIES] YIELMA (Victoria) CEMETERY
    2. D. Weatherill
    3. Hi Again; Another Victorian cemetery that was gazetted but noted as not being used. David YIELMA CEMETERY: Yielma is a small township just north of Nathalia on the Nathalia to Cobram Road. Selectors had moved into the Yielma area during 1875-1876. In June, 1880. State School Yielma was opened and in 1951 the school was closed with the children being bussed to Nathalia State School. On 24 August, 1878 a request for land to be set aside for a cemetery was made on behalf of the residents of the area. On 14 July, 1879 an area of nine acres, 3 roods and 38 perches was temporarily reserved by the Governor in Council and Gazetted on 18 July, 1879 [VGG 1879/1816]. In June 1891 in a letter from the Shire Secretary, Shire of Numurkah, to the Secretary, Public Lands Department, it was noted that as of this date there had been no interments in the cemetery. The Shire secretary then went on to request that the land reserved for the cemetery be used for grazing purposes. In 1956 [VGG 1956/1016) the cemetery reservation was revoked and was noted to as being reserved as a recreation reserve. In 1991 the land was re-reserved as a Natural Interest Reserve. If anyone has any further information on this cemetery, I would appreciate hearing from them. David Weatherill Bundoora Victoria Australia

    1. [AUSTRALIA-CEMETERIES] DEREEL (Victoria) CEMETERY
    2. D. Weatherill
    3. Good morning; One of the Victorian cemeteries that was gazetted but would appear not to have been used. David DEREEL CEMETERY: Dereel is a small town to the south of Ballarat on the Ballarat to Cressy Road. In its early days miners had worked the Spring Creek Goldfields in the area since 1853. In 1864 a common school was provided in the town and closed in the 1930s.In 1959 State School Dereel reopened following support from parents in the area. On 16 March, 1874 the residents at Dereel petitioned the Victorian Department of Lands and Survey for the reservation of a site for a cemetery to be established. The petition was signed by sixty residents of the parishes of Dereel and Corindhap. The site that was requested was of seven acres on the Rokewood to Ballarat Road, to the south of the town. On 16 July, 1874 the Governor in Council approved that seven acres be temporarily reserved and the site was gazetted on 24 July, 1874 [VGG 1874/1387]. The records noted that by 1934 there had been no burials in the cemetery and on 10 July, 1935 the Government Gazette noted the revocation of the cemetery. If anyone has any further information on this cemetery, I would appreciate hearing from them. David Weatherill Bundoora Victoria Australia

    3. Pete I am not sure what is going on here exactly but this is a great site for genealogist and a great record for many cemeteries that are slowly disappearing. I for one would be insulted if I was to find my work being sold at a Personal profit. As you and Ray are aware I am currently involved in a project for a local cemetery which is using my pics, which are and will remain with the site, to go onto a cd along with many other records which will go on sale, the money to go to upgrading paths etc at the cemetery. All on the committee involved with this project have seen the cemeteries site and are also going to promote it on the cd. Over the years I have had people send me a lot of information, photos etc to add to my personal family history and one way of paying for that is to spend time taking the photos etc on site to help others, I guess in line with the movie, Pay it Forward. Unfortunately I do not have the time I would like to spend on taking more photos etc but am more than happy to help others when time and resources permit. Pete you do a great job in keeping the site up to date which I know would be a daunting job and from the e-mail I get I know it is all well appreciated by others. Australian Cemeteries returned Last Night, with the following updates. Such was the response, that there is little doubt, we are here to stay. Australian Cemeteries Website is in the most public of the public domains in this the 21st Century. In the past some of our volunteers, have had offers to line their own pockets with dollars by outsiders, who wish to then, on sell this information to profit themselves. Most of our volunteers are simply offended by such offers. This is Public Data, and should remain as such. We also understand that those , who make the effort to go out and complete this data, should have some reward, for the completed project. And some of our Volunteers, do just that. We have no problem with this, especially if they are Local or Family History Group, who put the income back into support of more of the same. But it became apparent that outsiders, may be milking, our system of photos, for their own reward. We value our volunteers efforts, and they should not have to put up with harassment from outside. If the harassment continues, the site will be removed. 3. That applies to lookups as well. Many of us can do lookups at several cemeteries and if the lookup is for a common name it can be confusing or take longer than it should. 3. Hi Garry; Thank you for your reply to my request. I know about this research project as I was part of it when I was president of the Genealogical Society of Victoria. Unfortunately there is still no indication as to when the information will be made available to the public. They are still working on the database. It was hoped that the records would have been made available on CD a few years ago, at least up to 1920. Still I will try to contact Ann to see if she can help but it may be hard to get any identification if there were a number of burials simply listed as Werribee. 3. Hi Dave, I was looking in a Genealogy magazine at the library some weeks ago and in a section titled something like the Births, Deaths and Marriages section there was an article where an Ann Fullerton and a team of volunteers were putting together cemetery records from information given on the Victorian death certificates. Apparently they had finished up to the 1920's and were proceeding along with it. I'm going from memory on this but it may be worth a ring. Yours, Garry Batt. ----- Original Message ----- From: D. Weatherill To: [email protected] Sent: Saturday, May 03, 2008 2:49 PM Subject: [AUSTRALIA-CEMETERIES] WERRIBEE (OLD) CEMETERY Hi Folks; With my cemetery research I have turned up records on a number of old cemeteries that were gazetted and in many cases not used. There were quite a few of these including Dereel, Yielma, Willenabrina. One of these early cemeteries was "Old Werribee Cemetery" that noted that there were burials in it before it closed. I am hoping some list member might be able to assist with further data. I do have a map showing the location of the cemetery. WERRIBEE (OLD) CEMETERY: An Order in Council approving the establishment of cemetery in the Parish of Cut-paw-paw on the Kororoit Creek Road was gazetted in the Government Gazette of 26 June, 1885, page 1848. The size of the cemetery was one acre, one rood and thirty-three perches. Very few records remain regarding the early stages of the cemetery but there is reference to indicate that the there were at least three graves, marked by headstones, close to the railway boundary on 27 January, 1927 when the District Surveyor lodged his report on the state of the cemetery. On 25 May, 1956 the Shire Secretary, Shire of Werribee wrote to the Secretary, General Health department, Melbourne noting the following: * that the council had no objection to the land being revoked and made available for commercial use, and * there was no record available as to when the bodies in the three graves were removed, but it was noted that the bodies were removed some 15 years before and reinterred in Williamstown Cemetery. Just who was buried in the three graves was not known. The Governor in Council signed an order to discontinue burials in the Old Werribee Cemetery on 5 March, 1957 and the order was gazetted in the Government Gazette on 13 March, 1957, page 902. Further research is required to ascertain the early history of this cemetery and just who were buried in it. Were there more than three graves in the cemetery? The information notes that there were three graves with headstones, nothing in regards to other burials with no visible markers or headstones. If anyone has any information on the burials in this old cemetery, I would greatly appreciate hearing from them. Cheers, David David Weatherill Bundoora Victoria Australia
