    1. [AUSTRALIA-CEMETERIES] Lest We forget, Men from Mackay killed in Great War of 1914-1918
    2. GLEN HALL
    3. Hi All Just to let you all know I have finally produced a webpage listing 320 men from the Mackay district who died during the service to their country in the Great War of 1914-1918. The list is not complete but is the result of 14 years of research and thousands of hours with the endevour of compiling a biographical register of all those who died in War from the Mackay Region. I think I have collected about 15,000+ pages of documentation so far conservatively. The men and Women of the Second World War and Vietnam will be done later in Volume 2. I have attached a list of these men with basic details and am asking for any assistance in providing further bigraphical details as well as contempory photos of the men as well as their final resting places for a publication. Yes I have researched at the Australian War Memorial, Commonwealth War Graves Commission and National Archives etc as well as local sources....even before these became easily available over the NET!!!!!! I am hoping to get this published by the end of the year and am working on manuscript at present so anything more I can add will polish it off and be a lasting memorial to these men. I am hoping to have the book presented to every school in the Mackay region as well as proceeds to go to local veterans groups so it will be not for profit. Eventually I will try to put some pages on the website as well I have many portraits of the men but there are still some missing as well as family details as well.... to find the listing goto http://www.mackayhistory.org/research/fallen_soldiers/great_war.html If you have anyone on the list you may be able to help with I will be extremely grateful to hear from you. cheers Glen Glen Hall Research Officer Mackay Historical Society and Museum Inc. 3. Karen, The most likely cemetery I think would have been Devonshire Street cemetery (also known as the Sandhills). It was "demolished" in 1901 to make way for Central Railway Station in Sydney Redfern, Central and Chippendale are all very close together (Redfern and Chippendale still exist as suburbs under those names). While I can find no mention of John (d 1857), there is mention of other Rochfords in the Catholic section at Sandhills. At the time of the cemetery closure in 1901, many remains were reinterred in other cemeteries and headstones relocated. The Rochfords were removed to Bunnerong cemetery (at Matraville, near Mascot and Sydney Airport and sometimes known as Botany Cemetery) in 1901. Details are: Maria Rochford died 1838 (94 1834) also John died 1836 also Mary Ann died 1837, also Elizabeth died 1841 aged (--) months. At the time the book *** was written, the headstone was upright but in poor condition. 3. Hi List, I have a John ROCHFORD (rochfort) who died in George Street, Redfern, Sydney district of Chippendale. In 1857 age 57 undertakers were DIXON. His death certificate states that he died George Street, Redfern but does not give place of burial, only states buried in Catholic section. Not being familiar with Sydney or suburbs, I have tried google to try and find the nearest cemetery with no luck. Can anyone give me any suggestions as to where he and his wife may be buried. her name was Elizabeth, she died 1883 Any help or suggestions most appreciated Thanks Karen --------------------------------- Get the name you always wanted with the new y7mail email address.

    3. I did not specifically relate my comments to cemeteries (of which I have indexed many for Family History societies and they remain with those societies - not sold off) but to a couple of articles which I wrote many years ago and to handouts I gave to a family history group. I was upset that someone had chosen to put these articles onto the web - I accidentally found same whilst "surfing" - first page available to view, then pay to view rest of same. The articles, written by me, did relate to cemeteries and their relationship to our social history. I agree with everyone else's comments on the wonderful work that is being done by all the volunteers giving freely of their time, doing all the hard work, long hours trekking through cemeteries, trolling through records of various standards of writing, imputting notes onto computer, to say nothing of the costs expended personally. This is a great site - especially Pete and the others who keep these sites available for us.
