Woronora Cemetery has a wonderful "toy" outside their office where you type in your names and it tells you where they are buried and directions to the grave. Why hasn't anyone else thought of that idea !???! Wouldn't we have fun !!!!!!!!!!! ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, September 29, 2008 5:01 PM Subject: AUSTRALIA-CEMETERIES Digest, Vol 3, Issue 148 > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. Hi David, That would be Walter Jolly. Ivy is still alive, well into her 90's but alive. We brought this house from Ivy 2 years ago. Ivy is in Jacaranda lodge, aged care home. Which was the Nyah West hospital. The Jolly's brought this house in 1974. Walter was the water bailiff. Ivy home duties. Ross road, runs by the dis-used football oval. The cemetery is off Yarraby road.(not sure if that's the correct spelling) I know it as Nyah/Nyah West cemetery. So far i"ve been in contact with a lady, with family buried Nyah/Nyah West in 1897.All died from diphtheria. The new trustee did not have this information. There is no cemetery at Tyntynder. There is a small private cemetery at Leewah station. Which I am still trying to get names of burials, and three graves at Poon Doon station. Hi Peggy; What I have in my cemetery listings and files is as follows: * Nyah Cemetery (also known as Tyntynder North Cemetery) - located in Ross Road, Nyah West. I was wondering if this is the cemetery you are after data on. A quick check on the cemetery records we hold at the GSV and I note we hold the following in our cemetery file. * JOLLY, Ivy: Nyah Cemetery Headstones: 19/4/1887 - 3/8/1982. Let me know if this fits in, but I cannot locate any Nyah West Cemetery. Cheers, David At 04:16 PM 21/09/2008, you wrote: >Need help replacing old burial record for Nyah West. Good Afternoon; Another old cemetery in Victoria that it would appear very little is known about. If anyone has any further information on it, I would appreciate hearing from them. I am not even sure the cemetery was used, but who knows!!! COBUNGRA CEMETERY * The cemetery was located off the Benambra Road (between Omeo and Benambra)near the township of Hinnomunjie * A request was made for a cemetery in the area to the Victorian Government in July, 1875. * The area was referred to as Reidy Creek, Omeo Plains in some of the paperwork at the time.. * The site requested for the cemetery was inspected and a set of plans were drawn re the location in June, 1877 * On 29 October, 1877 the Governor-In-Council approved an area of 5 acres as a cemetery. * The cemetery was gazetted in the Victorian Government Gazette on 29 October, 1877, page: 2072. * The map of the cemetery notes it was near the town of Hinnonmujie. * Nothing more seems to be known about the cemetery. * There is a brief note that it was believed there were no burials in the cemetery. * The cemetery was located on a road opposite the land owned by W. Condon at the time. * It is believed that the cemetery land was never revoked. Again any further information on this old cemetery would be greatly appreciated. I wonder if there were any early burials in it!! Regards, David ------------------------------------------- David Weatherill Bundoora Victoria Australia
Good afternoon; Another old Victorian cemetery that would appear not to have been used. DARLEY CEMETERY * Darley is located just out of Bacchus Marsh, Victoria. * A cemetery of 5 acres, 3 roods, 8 perches at Darley was gazetted in 1858. * It is believed the cemetery was never used. * An old map identified that cemetery to be located on the corner of Grey Street and Nelson Street, Darley. * On 16 April, 1934 the old cemetery was inspected by the Department of Lands and survey with a recommendation that the land could be used for any purpose. * In the Government Gazette (Victoria) on 22 August, 1934 there was a revocation order in regards to the cemetery reservation. If anyone has any further information on this cemetery, I would appreciate hearing from them. Even though it is stated officially there were no burials in the cemetery, I was wondering if there were any burials in the cemetery? With a number of old cemeteries, once the cemetery land was identified, burials did tend to be undertaken in them. There is a very small cemetery file (3pages) on this cemetery. Good Morning; Another interesting issue that has arisen. With my research into old Victorian cemeteries I have found information that there was a burial ground/cemetery at Kooreh just out of St Arnaud in Victoria. It would appear that the cemetery was never gazetted nor had Trustees. In a memo dated: 1 August, 1890 from the Inspectors's Office, Maryborough Police Station to the Superintendent of Police, Sandhurst was the following: "I beg to bring under the notice of the Supt that there is an allotment of land adjoining the homestead of Mr Vanrenen's Avoca Forest Station, and near Logan Post Office, which was used as a burial ground during the rush. ...It contains about a dozen graves. No grave was opened in it for many years until 5 May last, when the child of a man named Thomas Cummings was buried there. The death of the child was duly registered and I am informed that other members of his family were buried there. I am told that the cemetery was not opened with the consent of the Governor-In-Council nor gazetted as such, in accordance with the Act. There are no Trustees nor Regulations for its Management, neither is a book kept for the registration of burials. As the cemetery in it present condition affords facilities for the secret burials of any person whose death may be due to violence, I would suggest that this report be forwarded to the proper authority, with the view of having burials in this ground prohibited, or, if allowed that it may be under proper management." Accordingly, in the Victorian Government Gazette on the 24th October, 1890 there was a notice of Burials In the Kooreh Cemetery to be Discontinued. This was approved by the Governor In Council on 16 October, 1890. I now believe that the Kooreh Cemetery was also called the Avoca Forest Cemetery or Logan Cemetery. I have located death certificates noting burials at the Avoca Forest Cemetery from 1871 to 1878. Can any member advise me of the following in regards to this Kooreh burial ground: (a). Is the burial ground/cemetery still there today? (b). The names of any/all the dozen or so burials in it? (c). Any information about this burial ground. It is interesting to note old cemeteries/burial grounds have a number of different names during their history or in varios official documents. Any help would be greatly appreciated. We are currently transcribing the newer and Lawn parts of the Warrnambool Cemetery. While the index is at a manageable size and won't take up too much server space on our web site, we wll upload the index on a "work in progress" basis. Note that it is exactly that - a 'work in progress'. Date calculations have not been done and it is not integrated into the Global Surnam index. It is stand-alone. Have completed a bit under 1000 names so far, so you may find some useful data in there. Go to our homesite (listed below) as usual, and click on the "Bonus" link beside the "Cemeteries of SW Victoria" link. Enjoy.
