    3. Hello Members, I am doing the Bouckley family tree and Arthur Aubrey Bouckley died in Queensland in 1969 and I have no details of his age at time of Death or his parents or where he is buried so I thought I would run this by you all to see if any one out there is doing the Bouckley line or just may be able to help me. Arthur Aubrey Bouckley married here in Victoria in 1941 to Jane Anderson, they only had one child and divorced then Arthur Aubrey Bouckley left Melbourne and remarried to ????, Jane Anderson also remarried to a Len Hutson date?, not sure if I have the correct spelling here of Len's surname. I would be most grateful if any one out there can help with me at all. Regards Glenys

    3. Nola If you contact the cemetery they may be able to tell you if it is a Private, common or Paupers graves. I believe the common graves could not have markers on them and were possibly the cheaper alternative, where a paupers grave was paid for by the government. David where are you, you would know this inside out! Carmel Hi All Thanks Carmel for your comments re common graves but maybe someone can clarify something for me. I have always been led to believe that "common graves" were essentially "pauper" graves paid for by either the government or charitable organisations. The multiple burials that I referred to in my previous note were actually privately arranged by funeral directors and the deceased families in order to reduce but not eliminate costs and therefore I believed them to be in a different catergory to "common graves". I hope someone can clarify this for me. Kind regards, Nola Violet Town Make the switch to the world's best email. 3. Hi Everyone Normally in NSW the person who owns a grave has the authority to say who will be buried in that grave. So maybe the funeral directors bought some graves and then offered them to various families to cut down the costs to them? 3. These were common graves and it was not just in Northcote. It was a common practice. Carmel Hello again all In a conversation about this topic tonight with my 81yr old Mum (who is still as sharp as a tack) she was saying that her Mother told her that at the height of the Depression they knew of funeral directors in Northcote that would arrange 2 or 3 people not previously known to one another to be buried together to slash the cost for the individual families. Makes sense really, especially in those times. Regards, Nola Violet Town Make the switch to the world's best email. 3. Hi Listers, I have a GG grandmother buried at Waverley Cemetery, Sydney, in a plot purchased in 1901 by a daughter who was subsequently buried in the same plot in 1933. Recent correspondence with the cemetery advised that the term of the purchase had expired however so long as I could prove relationship to the original plot purchaser I could also be buried there on updating the purchase. 2. Charmaine Maher
    3. There's always the other side of the coin too, where cemeteries have pre paid plots on their books, but they never get used. Most likely due to families either moving away, or the kids not being made aware of the existence of the pre paid plot before mum and dad pass away. How long do they have to wait until they can re-sell those old plots? Charmaine -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of nola k Sent: Thursday, 9 October 2008 5:22 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [AUSTRALIA-CEMETERIES] Pre Paid Plots Etc Hi all My Grandparents on both sides purchased plots at Preston in the early 1940's with Dad's mother being buried there in 1948 and his father in 1974 even though he had remarried. With regards to the other part of this discussion is the fact that my brother was killed in Mt Isa (North West Qld) but was buried at Preston in 1964 with Mum's Dad due to the fact that we had very little money left after having brought him home to Melbourne by air(where Mum and Dad always knew they would return to) as you can imagine the costs involved in 1964. This in turn led to Nana being buried with my Aunt and my Uncle being buried on his own. Life throws out the best laid plans at times!!! Cheers, Nola Make the switch to the world's best email. 3. Some churches that I have been working with were reserving "Exclusive Right of burial plots" back as early as 1920 and I daresay, it probably happened prior to this. In fact the Anglican Church of St John's in Canberra was closed to burials in 1937 unless you held a prior Exclusive Right of Burial. 3. I also do lookups at my local cemetery (Boroondara Cemetery, Kew). And I agree that although most burials are from deaths in the surrounding suburbs, there are many from more distant parts. An additional factor may have been cost, as well as family links. Burial plots were expensive, and families held title to their plot. If there was a space still available, it may have been a saving to bring a body some distance rather than purchase another plot. Cathie Shaw
