    1. [AUSTRALIA-CEMETERIES] Greek death registrations
    2. joko
    3. Hi, as you may all have figured out I'm researching a Greek family for my cousins partner. Now I'm trying to confirm years of deaths etc, doing basic stuff, and what I've found is that quite a few either haven't been registered, or haven't been registered PROPERLY. Two surnames for example Cotsos. Now Costa is registered, but his wife Eleni isn't. I tried just Cotsos and their is just ONE registered on the Death index. Now I find that amazing, considering how many Cotsos' must be around. Ditto with Papadopolous - I thought their would be hundreds registered (oh by the way I suppose you all know "opolous" means "son of" just as an aside), but no, their were only TWO Papadopolous' registered. Amazing. I understand it's not a Greek thing to put death notices in the papers much, but I thought ALL deaths had to be registered, yes???? Oh the Papadopolous, that was Eleni's maiden name. Also due to a family fight I know one of the sons changed his name to Kotsos, eh, easy en ough to trace, but.. I have another family (same group), who changed their names from Paraskevas to Parris, but I can find no record of the name change on National Archives website, and very little else. I just find this all so frustrating. Any advice (I've got the Valium, so any OTHER advice)... With thanks in advance, Jo.

    1. [AUSTRALIA-CEMETERIES] Seymour question
    2. joko
    3. I have a Georgina Parris, died 27 Aug 1989, buried at Seymour according to a funeral noticed (listed on the GSV site, no details), and I went to the Aus Cem website, followed the links to both Seymour sites, which both have photos (isn't that lovely), and yet neither of them listed any Parris'. Now I KNOW she could have been buried without a headstone, if so she'd be the only one in this family so far, all the others have elaborate huge headstones. What do you think? Cheers, JO.

    3. Hi Ray, I spent many researching and writing about Elizabeth Scott and her two convicted cohorts who were hanged at Old Melbourne Gaol on 11 November 1863 and they were buried at Melbourne General Cemetery rather than in the grounds of the Gaol. I don't know why this was the case but it was. 3. Anna, What time period ? What religion were they ? Any clues as to where in the Sydney area they died ? Are they recent (i.e., say after 1970) deaths? Is there a death notice in the papers perhaps listed in the Ryerson index? Are they pre 1954 deaths and is there a death/funeral notice listed in the newspapers (many now on-line through NLA) Without some more information about your Haining people, it's difficult to give a useful answer. Rookwood is Sydney's biggest cemetery with a crematorium now attached. It opened in the 1860s There's Macquarie Park cemetery (formerly Northern Suburbs cemetery) There's the Northern Suburbs Crematorium (opened in the late 1920s or thereabouts) There's Waverley cemetery Woronora Cemetery Eastern Suburbs Memorial Park (which includes Botany cemetery) Field of Mars South Head cemetery at Vaucluse Balmain general cemetery (closed 1912 and the Balmain Catholic cemetery closed around 1902) St Stephen's Newtown (aka Camperdown Cemetery) Devonshire Street cemetery (aka Sandhills) closed 1901 Loads of little cemetery areas attached to churches and many more ........more info required please.
