    1. Ships Logs - Where to find them

    3. Dear List, I have a puzzle (outlined below) that I think will only be definitely resolved by reading the ships logs of the 1868 voyage of the Caesar Goddefroy from Hamburg to South Australia and then onto Sydney. Can anyone tell me if these documents were deposited and where I could try to access them? My problem is this: My VOGEL family is listed on the Emigrants from Hamburg 1866-69 microfiche in two places: The Passenger list (presumably on departure) shows: Carl, age 35, Elisabeth age 36, and children Carl(7), Elisabeth (5), Emilie (2) and Martha (6 months). The transcript from the local newpaper reporting the arrival, on the same fiche, lists: Carl, Carl, Elisabeth, and Emile. There were 5 deaths noted, 2 infants and 3 adults. The mother, Elisabeth, is known to have died on the voyage. However the presence of the fourth child Martha has been a surprise as family legend has always only said there were 3 children, and one was given up for 'unofficial' adoption shortly after arrival. My fundamental question is really, did baby Martha also die on the voyage, or was she not reported in the newspaper but survived, presumably to be 'adopted' by another family? I would also like to know any causes of death, as the impact of Elisabeth's death on the family's history was obviously quite large. Any thoughts much appreciated. regards Kay
