Some that I have traced were taken from published books where there were minimal details (sometimes questionable), some IGI births are from estimates calculated from the probable age at marriage being 20 or 25, some are from a patron's unsubstantiated anecdotes about their family, and some are from actual original documents where the person may have been unsure of their own age or birth place. Some of the IGI is exactly correct but you never know which ones without further research. The IGI at best is only a secondary reference to other records. 3. Interesting Comment Gary, Have you ever considered the amount of work the L.D.S. do? And it's their to be shared by everyone, shame as it always seems to being knocked for small mistakes or what ever but it is rare to see anyone making comments on the positive side or thanking the L.D.S. for the amount of work they do throughout the world. If we joined together and helped each other towards our goals the world could be a better place to live, but their will always be the takers and the givers sadly the takers will always outweigh the givers. I'm not a memeber of the L.D.S. but I do support what they do in documenting genealogy and history. Raymond Henderson. I've repeated your first paragraph because I agree. My message was meant as a warning - one that applies to any index where you don't know the source of the information. It's only because I use the IGI so often that I'm aware of their range of sources. Some are of very weak quality, and you don't know which without checking. Most are ok, and include extra details that don't fit the IGI's format. Either way it's worth checking the source. >I'm not a memeber of the L.D.S. but I do support what they do in documenting >genealogy and history. More than the IGI I use the films of documents that will probably never be entered onto the IGI. There's thousands of English records with information that doesn't suit the IGI's format of birth, christening and marriage, records in foreign languages, censuses, shipping lists, court documents, school attendance registers. Where else can anyone have access to 19th century birth records from Alsace, or marriage permissions for the Austrian conscripted military before WW1. Their current filming projects in Romania and the Czech Republic will probably be available in a couple of years. Maybe soon they'll be able to pick up their projects in the collapsed Jugoslavia, after having to dump their equipment in a rush a few years ago to get out alive from the war zone. These sort of projects take years of negotiation and thousands of dollars for the rights, before they fund the hands on work themselves, and it only costs a few dollars to have a film available here in Sydney. Their extremely cheap CD of the Family History Library Catalogue is among my most used resources. Will that do for a personal thanks for their work?
