Hello List, Would anyone Know when the first N.S.W. Lottery was drawn. I believe a Great Aunt of mine won it and that there was a write up in the Paper. Betty
Hello Betty My Australian Encyclopaedia says that the oldest continuing public lottery in Australia is Tattersall's. It was established in Sydney in 1881 by George Adams licensee of the Tattersalls Hotel in Pitt Street. When the NSW governnment declared lotteries illegal in 1893 he moved operations to Queensland. Two years later he moved it to Tasmania, as Queensland also declered it illegal. Of NSW I found that a public lottery was drawn in 1849, with tickets at 4 pounds, to dispose of some landed properties of the Bank of Australia, which was in liquidation. This caused controversy and that was the finish of lotteries until Adams started his(above). In 1930 the Lang Labour Government passed an Act to establish the NSW State Lottery, and it began operating in August 1930. This was during the Depression. I have pages more about Australian lotteries in the book if this is not enough. regards Shirley Mcleod ----- Original Message ----- From: Betty Raffaele <raffbet@acr.net.au> To: <AUSTRALIA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, November 09, 2000 10:09 AM Subject: N.S.W.
