This was a steamship of 9339 tons. She was built in 1908 and carried 93 passengers and 10000 tons of cargo mainly flour and frozen meat. The vessel called at Durban on her second homeward (UK) voyage ex Adelaide on the 25/7/1909. After replenishing her bunkers she sailed for Capetown and disappeared. The Board of Trade opened an enquiry in Dec 1909 and in Feb 1911 determined that the "Waratah" was lost in a gale of exceptional violence, the first great storm she had encountered and capsized. She belonged to the Blue Anchor Line. I would like to obtain a listing of passengers and crew lost from this maritime disaster. I have been told by many relations that I had a great uncle among the crew; a steward with the surname of Blake. How can I corroborate this? Thank you in anticipation. Noel T Blake.
