Hi Everyone, I have heard great things about this mailing list, so I thought I would see what assistance you could provide for me. Just after WW1 my great-aunt (Barbara Duncan) married William Adam and they soon moved to Australia from the NE of Scotland. I have been able to obtain a photo which I believe to be of them and their family. I am very confident that this photo is of them, and at the bottom of the photo it reads: "Dellow-Studio. Largs S-17" I have had a look around on the web and believe that there is a Largs in NSW and one in South Australia. I also have checked a BMD database for NSW but I cannot see either William or Barbara there. I would love to be able to find out more about the family, in the photograph there are five girls. Any help on the old postcode, if indeed that is what the S-17 is, would be of help and I can then be at least hopefully be searching in the correct state. Regards, Grant Cargill
Hi Grant, To my knowledge 'S-17' would not be an Australian code. Our codes are all 4 digits eg: Sydney 2000, Melbourne 3000 However there is a 'Largs' in Ayrshire, Scotland... http://www.largsonline.co.uk/largsonewhome.html http://www.scottish-towns.co.uk/ayrshire/largs/ though the postcode 'S-17 or S17' appears to outside of Sheffield... I checked the Victorian deaths to 1985 and could not find a Barbara Adam, nee Duncan. Probably not a bad idea to look for deaths under ADAMS as well. I had a quick look in our National Archives, but couldn't see anything relevant. http://www.naa.gov.au/the_collection/recordsearch.html You could write to them and see if they have a file on William & Barbara Adam. Kind regards, Sherrie. MargM, Here is pretty much all that I know about Barbara and William. William Adam born Arbroath, Angus, Scotland 23 Nov 1888 (father James Adam (flaxmill worker) mother Elizabeth McKenzie) and Barbara Vannet Duncan born Carnoustie, Angus, Scotland 26 Dec 1888 (Father John Duncan (salmon fisher) mother Betsy Herd) were married in Dundee 10 August 1917. Soon after the first world war Barbara and William emigrated to Australia for William's health as he, like so many, had been gassed in the war. In the photo Barbara looks around 45-50 so dates the photo at around 1933-1938. The daughters, I would estimate, range from around 8 up to 17. I think I need to discover the two eldest girls yet, one may have been Margaret and one perhaps Elsie. There was another photograph, which I thought was a slightly younger Barbara in NSW (due to dragon on front cover of photo), but she is wearing glasses. I hope this helps a bit more and thanks again for everyones assistance! Hi Grant, I live very close to Largs, an outer 'suburb' of Maitland. We've never had any kind of postcodes like that here, just 4 numerals in this case, 2320. I suggest it would be Largs somewhere else in the world and not in Australia. Lynette Lynette Begg P.O.
