    3. Hi Grant and others I live in Victoria Australia I remember when the 4 digit postcodes came into being. Before that we had something like S 10 for populated places. I am not that old either. Perhaps the mail peoples would be able to help here. I am ill at present but a look at the Australia Post web page may help the search Elizabeth Lynette Begg wrote: >Hi Grant, > >I live very close to Largs, an outer 'suburb' of Maitland. 3. Hi all Well some of us older folk have short memories! The Australian four digit system only dates from 1967 (in common with most of the world, which adopted this system in the 1960s; presumably to aid new mechanical sorting systems. Germany was the first). Before that, in Australian cities, we had a method based on the British system of directional letters and numbers (although ours was more rational than theirs). For example, I lived in SE11, which became 3147. S10 was Beaumaris (consulting me old wall map of Melbourne, which is available for other look-ups as needed of course). And they were quite commonly used on letters, although not as universally as now. 3. Hi Liz, I'll be 50 in a couple of weeks and I can't remember any codes at all. I vaguely remember the postcodes coming in, but never anything before that. You never had to put it on your letters to post them - or do you disagree. I'm sorry but I don't remember anything other than a town and state being put in an address. Hope we solve this.
