I have just been to Tasmania and with the help of contacts through Rootsweb lists and the family History Society I have been to York Town and located the memorial, the site of the parade ground, water hole, location of soldiers' houses etc. The first settlement was set up under Patterson in 1804, and our Thomas Bates (there was another there earlier!) was stationed there from 1807 to 1810 under Grosser and 1 daughter (our line) was born there. I will write up a summary during the week and have taken photos - not yet developed. The locals are working on producing information and a 'muster' later in the year.
