Dear Listers My husband and I were discussing the days when we had to use food vouchers to buy various food items during the 1940s but we could not remember when these finished. I know we had various coloured vouchers for different items of food as I used to go shopping for my mum at our local grocery store and my husband being a grocer used to have to account for these vouchers as they were presented. Does anyone remember or know what year they were finished please. I could not find anything on google. Cheers Joan

Dear Joan, I have just turned 65, and remember Dad using petrol vouchers which I think were a dull reddish colour. I was very small, so maybe 1945-6. Best I can do, sorry. They were called Ration Coupons, I can remember Petrol, as you had to go to the police station to get them, or perhaps it was extra ones, this was probably about 1950, I also remember butter coupons. We did not need meat ones as we killed our own. Material and clothing was also rationed, my early dresses were made from a deceased great uncles office shirts. I understand this was part of the reason for the full skirts fashion as way of celebrating being able to buy as much material as you wanted to. Among the papers I have that belonged to my parents I found a coupon card, with one coupon left on it, the coupon was for butter for a child under 6 years and it has my name on it. I put it safely into my photo album, so it would not get mixed up with any other bits of paper that might be discarded one day.
