    3. Joan Rationing continued beyond the end of WWII gradually easing as items became available sugar came off the list mid-1947 and lastly meat late 1948. My Mother and a aunt had a grocery store at Perouse Rd Randwick. On one occasion just befor the rationing inspector arrived she could not find the coupons that had to match any rationed items she had sold. She was in a panic and prayin hard to St Anthony when the inspector arrived; she glanced down and spotted the ration coupons between two hessian bags. She was a great believer in St Anthony for the rest of her life. I know we had various coloured vouchers for different items of food as I used to go shopping for my mum at our local grocery store and my husband being a grocer used to have to account for these vouchers as they were presented. Does anyone remember or know what year they were finished please. I could not find anything on google. 3. Hello Joan Rationing was still going in the country areas around the North West of NSW I can remember in January 1949 every kid in town had to go to the railway station on a Saturday to be given a new pair of shoes You handed in a green coupon got the shoes in a size that fitted the soles of your feet and that was it- no fitting just rough potluck Then come Monday everyone at school had these new shoes on The teachers then sat the whole school down to swap around these shoes so that everybody had a close as possible fitting pair, brings back some memories Saturday also seen the handing out by coupon of butter and sugar but as was posted this finished Christmas 1948 but tobacco was still rationed till early 1949 I remember the word around town at Christmas 1948 that the local shop had some under the counter tobacco and my father sent my next elder sister and myself to get him a two ounce block Each one of us was each to get a block and when we fronted up the old shopkeeper pointed out that he had some chocolate blocks for sale and my sister conned me into buying two blocks with Dads last money I had never tasted chocolate so we finished it of before we got home My sister promptly presented Dad with her block of tobacco then pointed out that I had none the aftermath is still in my memory Regards John Shirley & John Smith s641025@hunterlink.net.au Maitland Area Lower Hunter Valley NSW Australia -----Original Message-----

    3. Hi All I can remember ration coupons during the war (born in 1937). Mum used to have to be very careful about use of butter etc. My main remembrance is how we could not get fresh fruit - the only time we had fried was of the dried variety which my Dad used to send home from his field rations. Tough old things they were, raisins, apricots sultanas, prunes mostly, but very welcome at the time.
