I am researching my great grandmother Mary NORTON, and her apparent partner of several years James CLAY. James was a bootmaker in Queenstown in the late 1890's and early 1900's, his father Richard was a bootmaker in the Kempton area (previously a convict from the "Nile"). From the electoral rolls and valuation rolls it appears that James and Mary lived together for several years, James' wife Mary (nee McNamara) had died in 1901. Mary had four children in Queenstown, Myrtle Lavinia born 1903, registered as NORTON, baptised 1904 as NORTON James Edward Clarence born 1904, registered as NORTON, baptised 1905 as CLAY Evelyn Dorothy born 1905, registered as CLAY, baptised 1912 in Hobart as NORTON Cecil Ronald born 1910, registered as NORTON, died 1910 It appears that James was the father of James junior and Evelyn, but possibly not the father of Myrtle and Cecil ? Mary later married Thomas Henry BUDD in Hobart in 1913, and they had four children, Mary died in Hobart in 1923. Does anyone have any connections or information ?
