Before Xmas someone was asking where Co. Dampier was in 1852. THe birth registration would have been listed as Co. Dampier as there would not have been any towns there then. As Mike S. advised NSW is divided into 141 Counties. Most counties are then further subdivided into parishes ( which have nothing to do with churches) Some towns in County Dampier are Bodalla; Central Tilba and Bermagui. "Government Schools of NSW 1848- 1998: 150 Years" published by the Dept of Education and Training has useful maps showing where all the Counties in NSW are. It also lists all the schools that are/were in each county. Also the alphabetical listing of each school includes the the county number. Besides the information about schools. I use this book to find where counties are, when I am doing land research. This book is availabe in many local libraries and is the most accessable way I know of finding out about counties short of a visit to the Land Titles Office. Elizabeth A. Roberts N.S.W.
