A friend's mother died when she was 6 months old, her father away interstate most of the time, so she was left with friends for 8 years. These friends were legal guardians, then at 8n years she was given to a family member to raise, and this person was given legal guardianship. All this would have been late 1940's into the 50's. How would one track these details/records in NSW? I'd appreciate any suggestions/help. regards Denise ###################################### Denise Marriott McMahon - ex Melbourne 21 years Brisbane Queensland - Searching - CONWAY - County Clare and N.E. Hi Denise, I may be wrong, but I've always been a sceptic about transfer of guardianship for children unless it was ordered by a court. My belief is that many people believe that they have been given guardianship by various people who have no right to grant that right, such as a police officer. As an example, my belief is a will which appoints a guardian of one's children is merely a statement of intent rather than a legal transfer of guardianship. For instance, the current authorities in NSW which arrange transfer of guardianships are: * Childrens Court (cases of child abuse and neglect etc) * Guardianship Board (cases of severe disability of children and adults) * Supreme Court (for unusual cases) Cheers, Phil Young. > -----Original Message----- > From: Denise McMahon [mailto:helendmc@powerup.com.au] > Sent: Thursday, 7 December 2000 8:42 PM > To: AUSTRALIA-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: Guardianships > > > A friend's mother died when she was 6 months old, her father away > interstate > most of the time, so she was left with friends for 8 years. Hi Denise, After my mother's death, when I was 6 yo I went to live with my father's sister and her family. My Aunt and Uncle were my guardians, although nothing was set up legally. Susan Jones nee Pegrum ----- Original Message -----
