A Bricklayer's Improver?? Can anyone tell me what this is? Is it a real job??- the context was that it was a qualification gained by a man who had been working as a brickies labourer. He went on to become a builder. 1930s era NSW. I have never heard the tem - only Bricklayer and bricklayer's labourer. Jill
Hello Jill, A bricklayers improver is a person who did not serve an apprenticeship as a bricklayer but did a crash course for about 12 months or so laying bricks and getting more money than an apprentice in their final year of apprenticeship. As an apprenticed Carpenter & Joiner in the early 1950s I was one of those apprentices who was disadvantaged by Improvers. Fortunately the Unions eventually got rid of improvers.
