    3. Subject: International Exhibition 1880 Denise asked : > I hav just been speaking with a cousin who now tells me he has many medals of >our great grandfather, one of which is to do with the Exhibition of 1880 in >Melbourne. This medal has "a woman with a funny hat on one side Dear, oh! me!..That's Queen Victoria! with crown and a sort of scarf draped down towards the back of her head behind her ear. >and on the other some wording that would be "Inventas aut qui vitam excolvere per artes" (from Virgil's Aeneid 6.663) , and is a description of those met in heaven: "Or those who ennobled life through the truths they discovered" As a motto it means "Life ennobled by truths" >and H.A.Crawford Juror". Judging the exhibits was a serious matter over 350 gentlemen volunteered for the thirty eight juries to judge thousands of exhibits. They began their work in the previous October and were expected to announce the medal awards by 21 March . Presented were 559 first awards to Great Britain, 388 to France, 373 to Victoria, 259 to Germany, 138 to Italy & 115 to USA >Can anyone explain what this medal is and what position a "Juror" was for the >Exhibition? A member of a committee of judges for one of the categories of exhibits. Hope that helps. Regards, Ada
