Hi List, Can anyone tell me a web site where I may find history on the LightHouse at Cape Schank Victoria (when built and Light house Keepers etc). Just found out my ggrandmother was born at Cape Schank 1847, but I am wondering what would have been there other than perhaps the lighthouse back then. As there is not a lot there to-day. Have asked at local library but no book to tell me. Thank you for any help. If she was born at sea at this point would it have been place of birth Cape Schank or born at sea? Regards Roy

Responsibility for lighthouses was passed from the states to the commonwealth in 1915, and most of the paperwork went eventually to Australian Archives, who have produced a book "Lighthouses in Australia " a Guide to Records held by Aust Archives published Sept 1991 A book:" From Dusk to Dawn: a History of Australian Lighthouse " by G Reid, Dept of Transport & Communications/Macmillan 1988 The earliest personnel records are 1883, so not much use to you. > > Just found out my ggrandmother was born at Cape Schank 1847, Sorry I did not read this first 1847! Cape Otway and the Williamstown "Gellibrand's Point Light" were built in 1848, and were the first Victorian lighthouses. I know Cape Schank light was still being debated in 1856, so definitely nothing there in 1847. >but I am wondering what would have been there other than perhaps the lighthouse back then. If she was born at sea at this point would it have been place of birth Cape Schank or born at sea? Usually "born at sea" but usually in the log book the latitude would be given. Perhaps they were hoping to claim "Australian born" for citizenship for the child. Regards, Ada
