Cathy was asking about army records At the Mitchell Library Sydney and probably some other libraries in Aust. there are PRO micro films ( Public Record Office London) In this collection are the pay list for the army regiments that were station in Australian and NZ. It is slow and tedious work but if you have a date in Aust where his occuption is listed as Army sgt. Check in books like' the Dress and Insignia of the British Army in Australia and NZ' by Ronald Montague or 'The Remote Garrison the British Garrison in Australia' for which regiments were in Australia at that time. The instruction on how to use the PRO Army paylist also lists where the regiments were. Having worked out the likely regiments check the PRO lists for the likely Micro films then start looking , it is not a quick hit job. I have been doing some work on these reels in this period recently many are quite difficult to read and you need to make sure you are looking at paylists for the regiment in Australia or where even and not in the UK many regiments sent only part to Australia or sent it out over time. All the paylists for all sections of regiment where ever are all jumbled up. Elizabeth A. Roberts N.S.W. Genealogical and Historical Research Wahroonga NSW
