Friday 19 Jan a question was asked about early schools in NSW and answered from "Sydney and the Bush" an exellent source re schooling but further to what was written. There were a number of schools run by the Anglican Church pre 1848 and funded by the government. Records re funding at State Records. Ebenezer church (Presbyterian) built 1809 was also used as a school room. The government orphanages run schools. Govenor King established the first. Children from the orphanages were apprenticed out aged about 12.( Not all children in the orphanages were orphans. Children accompanying female convicts post mid 1820s were placed in the orphanage, soldiers whose wives died put their children in the orphanage.) Children in the orphange were educated and trained in employable skills. Some children were sent to work from about age 9. There are children in the 1828 Census listed as working aged 9. A 9 year old girl was considered quite capable of minding babies and young children. Assistered immigrants children of 12 to 14 were considered old enough to be sent to work seperate from thier parents. The early schols were in the settled area, ie in 1820s there were schools in the Hawkesbury but not the Hunter- Another excellent source post 1848 is "Government School of New South Wales" in several additions the latest is 1848-to 1998. Most NSW public Libraries would have a copy. This book lists when every government school was started and what sort of school it was. A full public school a provisional or half time school. In the front there explanations of how many pupils were required for each type, this changed over time.- Elizabeth A. Roberts N.S.W. Genealogical and Historical Research Wahroonga NSW
Hi List, can anyone suggest where I might purchase a second-hand microfiche reader from in the Brisbane area ? I have searched online but not had much luck so far Bye for now June Nicholls, Queensland, Australia juneen@one.net.au http://web.one.net.au/~juneen or http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~juneen/
June, the "Local Trading Post" is a good place to start. Look under office equipment. I understand that the trading post is also on line so you can do a search for it and then do a search for a reader.
