According to Wikipedia the East Indies isn't just confined to India: The Indies or East Indies (or East India) is a term often used to refer to the Malay <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malay_Archipelago> Archipelago in contrast to the West Indies <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Indies> , which refers to the Caribbean <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caribbean> . In a wider sense, the Indies is also used to describe lands of South <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Asia> and Southeast <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southeast_Asia> Asia, occupying all of the former British <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Raj> India, the present Indian <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/India> Union, Pakistan <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pakistan> , Bangladesh <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bangladesh> , Myanmar <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myanmar> , Sri Lanka <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sri_Lanka> , the Maldives <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maldives> , and also Thailand <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thailand> , Malaysia <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malaysia> and Indonesia <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indonesia> , which was last called the Dutch <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutch_East_Indies> East Indies before independence. The East Indies also include Iranian Balochistan <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balochistan_%28Iran%29> , Indochina <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indochina> , the Philippine Islands <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philippine_Islands> , Brunei <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brunei> , Singapore <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singapore> and East Timor <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Timor> . It does not, however, include Irian Jaya <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irian_Jaya> (West Papua), which is part of Melanesia <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melanesia> . Perhaps Grahame you need to look at some of these other areas. Hello Everyone Is there anyone who is familiar with the East Indies Police Brigade as I am not getting the help required. Where on line can I look up those who served in the East Indies Police Brigade in around the 1850's 1860's. I mean by name without paying huge amounts of money for researches. REgards Grahame James
Grahame Do you mean the East India Company which was involved in India during the British Raj? The Families in British India Society has a web-site www.fibis.org which has some free online searching available. This includes information relevant to the East India Company. It may also be worth checking the British Library www.bl.uk which includes information from the India Office. Perhaps you should look at www.genuki.org.uk for other links that may assist. Hello Marg, Many thanks for the information. I am working from, and have been for the last 10 years, a family tree that was researched by a distant great uncle. He was born in 1904 and after his wife died he spent many years researching the Moseley family. He wrote a book about the family, over 100 pages, and it is written in Welsh, and also a family tree chart. I am slowly working my way through his research. I pick out a certain family and try to add to it. Reading part of the book earlier in the week I noticed a comment about Alan Moseley, emigrating to Australia very young and that he had three children. With your information I can now confirm that Henry Alan Moseley was born in about 1887 the son of John Moseley and Mary Gardner Hughes. They lived in Trevethin, Pontypool, Monmouthshire Wales. Thank you so much for your help, another branch to which I can add some more information. BDM records are a State function . Some indexes for NSW , Victoria and Western Australia are on line . Australian census docs has never been kept until our last census . Even if they had been wouldnt have helped you as usually a 100 yr embargo on such records If their childrens names were what you say none married in NSW to 1955 Suggest you get copy of their marriage cert as this should give you names of parents and were born and will give you a starting point . www.bmd.nsw.gov.au > historic docs You can order on line from the registry or get copy from either of the 3 transcription agents for around $9 less . Hello Listers I am hoping someone on the list may be connected to the above Mary STOCKTON I am researching. Mary was born May 1846, by family stories, although it is not known whether in Australia or England. She married Jesse ELSTON a butcher in Mudgee in 1864 at St. Johns C/E, Mudgee with consent of her guardian James Farrant, and together Jesse & Mary had 4 children, Samuel Joseph, Elizabeth Jessie, Emily Rosetta & William. Jesse died in Surry Hills in 1873 and Mary remarried to John Frederick SMITH of Mudgee in 1874 and together they had Grace, Clara, Percival, Walter, Albert, Jack, Reuben as shown on Mary's death record in 1929 in Mudgee. I would be delighted to hear from anyone with any connection or information on the above. Thank you Joan in NSW -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. Up until about the 1930 many outer suburban houses were known only by house names, not street numbers. In the 1920s St Leonards was verging on being an outer suburb. Reconstructing the street to see which house numbers belonged to which house names can be quite difficult, especially if houses are still being built in the street. But it can be done by using the sands directories and working backwards using all the clues you can. Happy hunting. If I were you before I wasted time on this project I would look at Mitchell St Leonards, I suspect it had all been redeveloped so no houses to find when you find the numbers. Hello everyone, My name is Leanne and I have just joined your list hoping for some advice. I am trying to identify a photo I have just recently found behind another photo. It is a photo of a Hospital possibly a Private Hospital or even a Military Hospital. I cannot even identify what state it was taken in. My GGAunt was a nurse and she worked in NT, Vic, possibly QLD, Malta, Papua New Guinea. The main features of this photo are: There is a model T Ford in the background. There are 4 main buildings. They are white and built of wood. The windows are large and breezy. There is a military looking flagpole in the gardens. I believe there may be a Norfolk Pine Tree in the background. On one of the verandahs there are laid back chairs like for recuperating. All the windows are open and it was suggested it could be a TB Hospital. The gardens are well looked after. I have tried many sites for ideas but I am still in the dark. I would dearly love to find this hospital and pass a copy onto the appropiate historical society. Hoping someone may be able to help Kindest regards Leanne Baulch Canberra
