    3. Hello reminiscers. In 1947 the government made available extra coupons (I think for clothing, but maybe food, too) to schoolchildren who were over a certain height or over a certain weight for their height. I was not tall, and I was just on the right weight for my height, so I spent all my pocket money on three pounds of bananas at lunch time, managed to eat them all, fronted up for my weigh in after lunch, and managed to slip into the "overweight" group. My mother was amazed when I arrived home with my bonus coupons, and I had to explain what I had done. She gave me a lecture on "cheating" but she certainly didn't give the coupons back!. So 1948 seems to be, by consensus, about the time the rationing ended. Regards Ada Ada Ackerly. 3. Hi Cathy, If John DOODY's wife died a widow, that narrows down your time frame for his death as it means he had died before her; unless they assumed he was dead. Having worked in the trucking industry LUMPERs as I know it, are persons who load and unload trucks, vessels etc. Possibly he worked on the (shipping) docks or in the timber industry (loading logs on and off jinkers) or something. 3. Dear Listers Thank you all for your replies to the above subject....it brought back so many memories for my husband being in the grocery trade and myself when I used to go to the shops for my Mum and get the necessities with the food vouchers but did not realise it was 1948 when they would have finished. I am 65 and thought that I would have been older when going to the shops with these coupons. Thank you once again....I'll bet a lot of the kids would not believe that it was just as hard getting by then as it is for some of the young ones of today. Cheers Joan

    3. Hi All I can remember ration coupons during the war (born in 1937). Mum used to have to be very careful about use of butter etc. My main remembrance is how we could not get fresh fruit - the only time we had fried was of the dried variety which my Dad used to send home from his field rations. Tough old things they were, raisins, apricots sultanas, prunes mostly, but very welcome at the time. 3. Hello Joan Rationing was still going in the country areas around the North West of NSW I can remember in January 1949 every kid in town had to go to the railway station on a Saturday to be given a new pair of shoes You handed in a green coupon got the shoes in a size that fitted the soles of your feet and that was it- no fitting just rough potluck Then come Monday everyone at school had these new shoes on The teachers then sat the whole school down to swap around these shoes so that everybody had a close as possible fitting pair, brings back some memories Saturday also seen the handing out by coupon of butter and sugar but as was posted this finished Christmas 1948 but tobacco was still rationed till early 1949 I remember the word around town at Christmas 1948 that the local shop had some under the counter tobacco and my father sent my next elder sister and myself to get him a two ounce block Each one of us was each to get a block and when we fronted up the old shopkeeper pointed out that he had some chocolate blocks for sale and my sister conned me into buying two blocks with Dads last money I had never tasted chocolate so we finished it of before we got home My sister promptly presented Dad with her block of tobacco then pointed out that I had none the aftermath is still in my memory Regards John Shirley & John Smith s641025@hunterlink.net.au Maitland Area Lower Hunter Valley NSW Australia -----Original Message-----

    3. Among the papers I have that belonged to my parents I found a coupon card, with one coupon left on it, the coupon was for butter for a child under 6 years and it has my name on it. I put it safely into my photo album, so it would not get mixed up with any other bits of paper that might be discarded one day. 2. They were called Ration Coupons, I can remember Petrol, as you had to go to the police station to get them, or perhaps it was extra ones, this was probably about 1950, I also remember butter coupons. We did not need meat ones as we killed our own. Material and clothing was also rationed, my early dresses were made from a deceased great uncles office shirts. I understand this was part of the reason for the full skirts fashion as way of celebrating being able to buy as much material as you wanted to. If you do a google search on Ration Coupons Australian sites you get a lot of hits Elizabeth -----Original Message----- From: Joan [mailto:birtles@tpg.com.au] Sent: Monday, 6 November 2006 9:28 PM To: australia@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [AUS] Food Vouchers in the 1940's Dear Listers My husband and I were discussing the days when we had to use food vouchers to buy various food items during the 1940s but we could not remember when these finished.
