    3. Some time ago some one was asking about Benevolent Societies in one of the above, I picked up today in a book sale on remainder a book called 'Poverty Abounding Charity a Plenty; The Charity Network in colonial Victoria ' by R.A.Cage. Hale and Iremonger 1992. It looks at Migrant Aid societies,Benevolent Societies, Ladies Benevolent Societies and in an appendix lists all the charitable institutions in Victoria in 1901 including thier date of establishment where known. I have only flicked through it, an academic text but worth an interlibrary loan if looking for that sort of information. Elizabeth A.Roberts

    3. Ray Your your comment regarding Gary's contribution re the IGI is a bit harsh. As usual, Gary's comments were informative, accurate and helpful. He certainly didn't seem to be "knocking" the LDS, as you suggest. There's no doubt that most of us take advantage of, and appreciate the work of the LDS, but that doesn't mean that we are unaware of it's limitations. 3. Hi all, There is a property at Hannam Vale near Taree in NSW called "Maralla' and we are trying to find out where the name came from. The original owners were the PULLEN family, and as they came from England, maybe it is an English place or word? I have a book on aboriginal place names, and it is not mentioned there. 1. Re: , IGI Accuracy of Results.
    2. derek sm cusick
    3. G'day from WA before we get a bushfire going on this subject.I would just like to make a couple of observations, on the following messages (which are ALL correct; by the way!) Firstly I have always been told by LDS staff that the IGI are only intended as a guide as to where to search for verifiable information. Secondly as in the instance first quoted a lot of people are on the lists because a source person remembers there was an Uncle Bill but has no details. putting this person on IGI may then result in another researcher being able to tie in that person into their tree. In my own case I have no details of any Aunts or Uncles beyond the first names that I always used ( i.e. Aunt Gladys, was she Dads sister or Sister in Law, but I will list her as a relation on Dads side , in the hopes I mau in future find documents to make her one or the other,) So perhaps we should all accept IGI and many other online searches for what they all are,a source of HELP to find places to search for confirmation records of our ancestors. Just like Censuses etc they are only as much use as we make of them , misspellings, omissions and all. If we use them all together we can often find the people we seek. Also we should all try to help by answering queries, where we can , and maybe even putting our parts of the tree onto World Connect or similar to help others in their searches. I have traced my grandparents by use of UK Censuses, IGI, Ancestry Com , and a lot of list members around the world, So I know if we all pull together we can suceed,it just takes time and the ability to think laterally ewhen faced with brick walls. 1. Re: IGI documentation
    2. It is easy to find the extracted records when using the old IGI Fiche. In the number columns off to the right of the information, information extracted from birth/christening records will be preceeded by a "c" and information from marriage records by an "m". There are other symbols, but not as exact. Extracted records are read and entered twice (by two separate readers) They are then matched by a third person, and if they are not identical then the third person attempts to reconcile the problem. Thus the three combined are likely to do as good a job of reading the old records as a concerned descendant would be able to do, unless one is very learned in the handwriting and names of the era. Unfortunately, the computer is not as friendly in displaying this identification. Alas for progress. Barb Rice - Lafayette IN

    3. Interesting Comment Gary, Have you ever considered the amount of work the L.D.S. do? And it's their to be shared by everyone, shame as it always seems to being knocked for small mistakes or what ever but it is rare to see anyone making comments on the positive side or thanking the L.D.S. for the amount of work they do throughout the world. If we joined together and helped each other towards our goals the world could be a better place to live, but their will always be the takers and the givers sadly the takers will always outweigh the givers. I'm not a memeber of the L.D.S. but I do support what they do in documenting genealogy and history. Raymond Henderson. 3. I am trying to find out about the travel arrangements of a family that came out from Scotland between 1860 and 1873 and returned, minus the husband who died in Gippsland in 1873, to appear on the 1881 census. I cannot find them on the shipping lists for NSW or Victoria that you can access electronically through the state libraries. I can't say that I know the wife and children came out - although that would be unusual. All I know is that he is dead in Gippsland and his family is in Scotland in 1881. Any thoughts?
