    1. Shipping List Abbreviations
    2. Angela Keany
    3. Does anyone know of a site that explains abbreviations in shipping list records? I am transcribing several photocopies of ships passenger lists which relate to my immigrant ancestors. One set of abbreviations seems to pertain to religion. C,E,D and F. Another I'm assuming is a level of literacy /\ , /. I'm sure I'll come across more, I'm only up to the first list. Any suggestions? BRITTON, William, (here 1811), enlist-levy paid 24.6.1789 ENLIST UK 24.6.1789 RANK PRIVATE 26.9.1791 ARRIVE _ACTIVE_ 0.0.1795 GRANT 25acHAWKSBURY R.MP 19.7.1796 DISCHGE The source is Pamela Statham (ed), _A Colonial Regiment: New Sources Relating to the New South Wales Corps 1789-1810_, Bibliotech,ANUTECH Pty Ltd, Australian National University, Canberra ACT 0200, 1992. The entry above is on p. 257. As regards some of the more obscure abbreviations: I presume that the "enlist-levy" means that he was paid a bounty for enlisting. The "MP" at the end of the Grant entry stands for "Mulgrave Place". This book is a combination of two documents - one the ledger of Cox and Greenwood, agents for the regiment, and the other a register of every member of the NSW Corps initially compiled from many sources by Brigadier "Bunny" Austin - with substantial historical interpretation and background. Anyone needing information about the military in the early colonial period needs to look at this book.

    1. For Coralie Beer, Whyalla.Surname BROWN.
    2. Honor Humphries
    3. In May of 1998 I sent an email to the Australia list regarding JOHN AND CATHERINE ANNE BROWN who emigrated to Mintaro, S. Australia in 1852. I received a reply from Coralie Beer of Whyalla which I passed on to my friend who is researching the name BROWN. He now wishes to take up the thread again and sent an email to Coralie recently but it bounced back. Are you still on the list Coralie, perhaps you have changed your email address. If you read this email Nick West would very much like to contact you. He now has a computer and his address is nick.west@tinyworld.co.uk In case there is anyone else who may be able to help here is the original email I sent:- "My friend has in his possession some letters written to England by a John and Catherine Anne BROWN in 1852. They were sent from Mintaro, S. Australia. The letters mention Catherine Anne's sister Isabella and her brother Edward. They are signed by Catherine Anne Brown and she talks of John as if they were married so we can only assume that they were man and wife. Primarely he is researching the IRELAND family who emigrated to Canada in 1842, but the Australian letters were found carefully kept with letters from Canada. Nick is interested in finding out if the BROWNS are in fact related in any way to his family........" Hoping that someone can help with this. 3. I have a casualty form of a family member who served in WWI. From his casualty form there appears the comments: 'rejoined unit from camp hospital' and the place (as far as I can decipher) read as 'Inese'. The date given is July 1915. Can anyone confirm whether this is correct - and if so, where is it? (Other entries in June 1915 give Dardanelles and in September 1915, Alexandria is given.) 3. The soldiers on the Third Fleet were from the NSW Corps; Dr. T.G.(George) Parsons of MacQuarie University was researching them,THE NSW Corps, for several years. As far as I know nothing has been published. There is a NSW Corps Association some where in Sydney. Between George and the Association they pretty well have most of the research done. It is several years since I last spoke to George, then he was still going to publish, I don't know the current state of play. Sorry I don't have any contacts for the NSW Corps Association. 3. Having been underwhelmed by earlier replies I thought I'd have another go: Can anybody help me with answers or on-line locations for answers to these: Q:in April 1966 - was TV Ringside broadcast live from Melbourne's Festival hall on Channel 7 on Monday nights? Q:what year did Festival Hall change its name to Festival Hall from Melbourne Stadium? A: I found this out for myself - 1958!?! - originally it was the West Melbourne Stadium - it was the venue for a number of the 1956 Olympic events - wrestling etc. and when concert promoter Kenn Brodziak died some of his papers and documents were given to the Melbourne Performing Arts Museum - does anybody know what happened to other files and papers? does anybody know if there is an association for retired television technicians - and how may I contact the same? thanks Robert in Ferny Creek p.s. this may have something to do with genealogy - but it has a lot to do with history. I read recently on a university site that the Sydney Stadium at Rushcutters bay was pulled down in 1964 - so much for higher education web-sites - I know it was closer to 1974....

    3. Hello Dawn, Although there are no details given about the individual soldiers, Charles Bateson's book, "The Convict Ships", gives a very interesting account of the Third Fleet. It seems to have been the worst fleet of all (and Bateson doesn't seem to have many kind words about the soldiers!) 3. Good afternoon to all listers, I have a GGGGrandfather William Brittan/Britton/Brittain who was a trooper on the 3rd fleet. The Third Fleet seemed to be the forgotten fleet as there are a lot of references to the First and Second Fleeters but not much about the Third. However, while there are monographs that have been written about the convicts from the Third Fleet I am having difficulty finding one that gives details of the troopers that escorted them. My question is: has there been any publication regarding the troops that escorted the 3rd Fleet or their descendants? Thank you for any help you can give. Cheers Dawn from Watsonia, Vic.

I've repeated your first paragraph because I agree. My message was meant as a warning - one that applies to any index where you don't know the source of the information. It's only because I use the IGI so often that I'm aware of their range of sources. Some are of very weak quality, and you don't know which without checking. Most are ok, and include extra details that don't fit the IGI's format. Either way it's worth checking the source. >I'm not a memeber of the L.D.S. but I do support what they do in documenting >genealogy and history. More than the IGI I use the films of documents that will probably never be entered onto the IGI. There's thousands of English records with information that doesn't suit the IGI's format of birth, christening and marriage, records in foreign languages, censuses, shipping lists, court documents, school attendance registers. Where else can anyone have access to 19th century birth records from Alsace, or marriage permissions for the Austrian conscripted military before WW1. Their current filming projects in Romania and the Czech Republic will probably be available in a couple of years. Maybe soon they'll be able to pick up their projects in the collapsed Jugoslavia, after having to dump their equipment in a rush a few years ago to get out alive from the war zone. These sort of projects take years of negotiation and thousands of dollars for the rights, before they fund the hands on work themselves, and it only costs a few dollars to have a film available here in Sydney. Their extremely cheap CD of the Family History Library Catalogue is among my most used resources. Will that do for a personal thanks for their work? 3. I know nothing about the Universal Slipper Company, but if you can find out who owned it and they died whilst owning it you can get great details. I found all the details of a large furniture factory, a gold mine defunct, and a grocery wholesales company; 1919 in the deceased estate files at State Records. Stock records, list of employees and salaries etc Some of those files are a gold mine of information. Elizabeth A. Roberts N.S.W. Genealogical and Historical Research Wahroonga NSW
