Someone has sent me a very full tree printout taken from disks of the World Family Tree, but with only names and dates, no places, and no source references. The person who sent it is elderly, and is not a researcher, and doesn't quite understand the worth of detailed references. Does anyone have this set of disks, and can let me know what sort of details they have? If in Sydney, maybe I could visit and check the disks myself. Hello to all, I thought if I purchased a certificate, the dates would be correct but it turns out this is not the case. My aunt says she was born 17/11/1919, microfiche records say she was born 20/11/1918, and when I purchased her birth certificate, it read 30/11/1918. I phoned the Registry of BDM's in Brisbane and subsequently returned the certificate. They checked the original certificates and now I have the birth cert which shows 20/11/1918. Does this sort of thing happen often? Jeanie.
Dear List, I have a puzzle (outlined below) that I think will only be definitely resolved by reading the ships logs of the 1868 voyage of the Caesar Goddefroy from Hamburg to South Australia and then onto Sydney. Can anyone tell me if these documents were deposited and where I could try to access them? My problem is this: My VOGEL family is listed on the Emigrants from Hamburg 1866-69 microfiche in two places: The Passenger list (presumably on departure) shows: Carl, age 35, Elisabeth age 36, and children Carl(7), Elisabeth (5), Emilie (2) and Martha (6 months). The transcript from the local newpaper reporting the arrival, on the same fiche, lists: Carl, Carl, Elisabeth, and Emile. There were 5 deaths noted, 2 infants and 3 adults. The mother, Elisabeth, is known to have died on the voyage. However the presence of the fourth child Martha has been a surprise as family legend has always only said there were 3 children, and one was given up for 'unofficial' adoption shortly after arrival. My fundamental question is really, did baby Martha also die on the voyage, or was she not reported in the newspaper but survived, presumably to be 'adopted' by another family? I would also like to know any causes of death, as the impact of Elisabeth's death on the family's history was obviously quite large. Any thoughts much appreciated. regards Kay

Dear Robert, Perhaps the following from: Australian TV: the first 24 years edited by Peter BEILBY might help. > Q:in April 1966 - was TV Ringside broadcast live from Melbourne's Festival > hall on Channel 7 on Monday nights? Page 28 1966 HSV-7s TV Ringside begins its long run, hosted by Melbourne's Ron Casey and Merv Williams. Page 114 The Boxing obsession ....HSV-7s TV Ringside ran from 1966 to 1974, nationally 1969 to 1974 hosted by Ron Casey and Merv Williams. It was the longest-running, and possibly the best of them, probably because of the relationship with Stadiums Ltd, the dominant promotor of the sport in Australia, ensured some realism in the bouts and a good supply of fighters. .....Ratings...when Lionel Rose fought Alan Rudkin at Kooyong in Melbourne in March 1969. Perhaps a query to Channel 7 itself might yield a direct answer to your questions. (Dorcas Street, South Melbourne) I also believe that there is a TV museum (other than the Performing Arts Centre Museum) down Mornington Peninsula, Vic. somewhere. Have you searched the web? Company registrations, documents lodged and so on are held up to 1945 or thereabouts. See the on-line Concise Guide under Registrar-General's Companies Branch. Small private companies are not easy to track down and leave very little behind them. You might also consider pursuing the local government rate books for whichever council was involved at whichever period you are interested in (you don't say when the company was at Alexandria). You probably won't find local government records at State Records, since under the 1960 Archives Act the Archives Office of NSW was specifically banned from collecting local goverment records. I think that may have changed with the new legislation (have a look at the State Records web-site) but they probably haven't got round to gathering them in. Hello Elizabeth and others I have an old record on the AUTRALIAN HISTORICAL DIRECTORY database of Friends of the NSW Corps Society 14 Woovale Avenue NORTH EPPING However, this original record dates from 1988 and in the last 12 years I have had no reply from at least 5 letters sent to that address; on the other hand, none of them have been returned 'Not known at this address' either. Would appreciate an address update if you eventually do track them down. Regards Ralph Reid Sydney

My apologies for Cross-Posting, those who are on other lists may receive this on their list. For those who wish to use this information I suggest printing out this email (Apologies for the signature's, but that's life) After seeing a few emails on the topic of the Vic BD & M, I visited the page and here's a copy of the info thats contained and available to all who look at the page:- Please bear in mind if your'e using Netscape as your browser (Like me) you'll have to undertake a couple of Tune up's and changes, it's not hard at all, their FAQ page takes you through it, you'll have to do it before you start your search and transaction, then close and re-start your browser. My advice is to do these changes "BEFORE" visiting the site. Remember to have your credit card ready also. This is a copy (off their page) of the FAQ Section,. "If you are having any problems, you can find your answer here or phone our helpdesk on (03) 9262 1616 or send an e-mail to maxi@maxi.com.au Browser Settings/Problems Q. What settings do I need to check before I start? A. You will need to turn on Cookies. These are used so we know where you are in a transaction. No personal details or browser usage is taken from you. You will need to check that you have enabled SSL. If you are in a corporate environment or behind a firewall, you will need to make sure that the firewall accepts connections for both http and SSL. Q. What should the screen resolution and font size be set to? A. maxi is best viewed with your browser resolution set to 800x600 pixels. If you're using Internet Explorer, set the font size to Small. If you're using NetScape Navigator, set the font size to 12 Point. Q. Why doesn't my back button work? A. maxi is a 'transaction environment'. This means that the navigation is controlled by maxi. Each page is dynamic, the browser logs your entry point and maxi keeps track of where you are in the transaction. There is no Back facility within a transaction. You will be asked to confirm all the details you have entered before you pay for or send the information. Use the buttons maxi provides on the right hand side of the screen to navigate through the transaction. Q. Why doesn't my Internet receipt screen print out properly? A. The print settings on your browser need to be changed. Internet Explorer should do this automatically. If you're using Netscape you have to select the "Black Text" option from the Page Setup menu. Q. Why won't the results from my search print out? A. In Netscape the cache settings need to be increased. Fom the Edit menu choose Preferences. From the list on the dialog box choose Advanced and then Cache. Set the disk cache to at least 15MB. You will need to close and restart your browser. If the problem still exists, increase the cache size again. Q. Is it safe to send my personal information over the Internet? A. maxi uses secure encryption to ensure that your personal information is kept safe. maxi only works if you have cookies turned ON. No private data is stored in maxi cookies". When you complete a transaction, don't forget your receipt! There is NO minimum charge. You will be charged only for the number of results screens you view (99 cents per screen including GST), up to the maximum spending limit you enter. Each screen will contain a maximum of 10 records. A summary of the results will be displayed. NOTE: You can print the results screen. If you are using Netscape, you must increase your cache size first, then close and restart your browser. Go to the maxi home page FAQ section for detailed instructions on how to do this. Once you find the person you are looking for, you can purchase the certificate. Hi all I was wondering whether anyone might have access to the Passenger list for the 'Palamban' which I believe arrived in Hobart, Van Dieman's Land in 1832. Seeking confirmation that Esther Solomon is on board, probably with children... though I suspect that daughter Louisa could be listed as Louisa Davis, wife of John Davis... Also seeking a Mr HS Benjamin on the same vessel... I believe that Esther came out to VDL to join her convict husband Judah and his brother Joseph - merchants in Hobart and Launceston...
