    3. Hello Lee There is a White Bay in Sydney. It is near Rozelle and Balmain on the south side of the Harbour. I think that it now mainly a container terminal, but was part of old Sydney. Hope that is the one you want. 2. Grahame James
    3. Hello Everyone I would like to share with you this article from (Australian Family Tree Connections) After which I would liek your views. As well I would like us to band together and do something about it. "Threat to research" Researches in NSW and other states/Territories of Australia could see in the very near future the closure of any government record in which people are named. The reason is that if Australia is to trade with the European Economic Union it has to have privacy laws in place. Draft Commonwealth Privacy legislation is currently before the Federal and NSW State (at least) govermnents. However, in drafting these new privacy laws, it has been forgotten that the tools of trade of historians are records. In NSW the intestate records for 1880 to 1914 have already been closed- these are records about people who have died 86 to 120 years ago. I would appreciate your views on how we can stop the government from putting on more closures. We could write to the minister who is (The Hon B Debus, MP Attorney General) PO Box A290 South Sydney NSW 1232 We must not let this government interfere with our family history. Regards Grahame James

    1. Re: N.S.W. Lottery
    2. Shirley McLeod
    3. Hello Betty My Australian Encyclopaedia says that the oldest continuing public lottery in Australia is Tattersall's. It was established in Sydney in 1881 by George Adams licensee of the Tattersalls Hotel in Pitt Street. When the NSW governnment declared lotteries illegal in 1893 he moved operations to Queensland. Two years later he moved it to Tasmania, as Queensland also declered it illegal. Of NSW I found that a public lottery was drawn in 1849, with tickets at 4 pounds, to dispose of some landed properties of the Bank of Australia, which was in liquidation. This caused controversy and that was the finish of lotteries until Adams started his(above). In 1930 the Lang Labour Government passed an Act to establish the NSW State Lottery, and it began operating in August 1930. This was during the Depression. I have pages more about Australian lotteries in the book if this is not enough. regards Shirley Mcleod ----- Original Message ----- From: Betty Raffaele <raffbet@acr.net.au> To: <AUSTRALIA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, November 09, 2000 10:09 AM Subject: N.S.W. 1. Emerald Hill - Gunnedah region
    2. glenn woof
    3. Good morning List, I have just rejoined after a long trip in the UK gathering information on the forbears and now would like to clarify some details about the above area. When my grandparents [Thomas William WOOF and Winifred WINDER) married on 25th April 1913, the marriage certificat states the location and Emerald Hill, Gunnedah. The witnesses were Margaret H Lomas, Alma M Foreman so I feel that they may have been some local people There does not appear to have been any othere family members with them at the time. It is quite interesting that they came out separately from Lancaster to travel to Gunnedah to marry and live for a few years. Is/was this a village in that time or the name of a property? What sort of industry took place at that time? I have a feeling that there might have been a dairy as my grandfather worked on a farm in Lancaster. My uncle - Geoge WOOF was born in the area on 5 Sep 1913 My father - Jack WOOF was also born in the are on 19 Oct 1914 Between 1914 and 1915 they left the area to come to Sydney where their next child was born If anyone has any information regarding the area/district or property or some vague recollection of the names I would be ever so grateful to receive it. Thank you in advance and anticipation Glenn gwoof@netspace.net.au

    3. I have just found a death I have been looking for for 20 years. It is on the Vic Inquests index but not on BDM index. Does this happen often? I have two others which are on BDM as well as Inquests. What is the Vic Inquest info like when you access the case papers? Are they difficult to access? - I am sending my non research minded daughter to PRO to get the case papers for me. In NSW there is sometimes very little info as the actual papers for some years do not exist and we only have registers so the best information comes from newspapers. Jill in Sydney
