    3. Hi All There was apparently a Shepherd's Bush in Sydney.Have a look at Banjo Patterson's poem "Uncle Bill", which is on-line. He talks about the gangs of Surrey Hills and Shepherd's Bush. I'd never heard of it before, I must admit. You learn something new every day. It must have been somewhere around Central Railway. 2. Hello All Kerrie has the location of White bay pretty right, I grew up not far from there and know it well, in earlier days it was the site of a large caol fired electricity generating power station with quite an extensive network of raillines nearby to bring in the coal. There is still, I think several large grain silos bit further east of where the power station was located, I believe that the wheat was/is brought to the silos by train and then loaded onto ships for export. To slake the thirst of the local workers a large hotel, The White Bay Hotel was located on Darling St. very close to the power station. I think the building is still there but hasnt been used as a hotel for many years. Hope this helps a little Regards Patrick ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kerrie" <kerrie@optushome.com.au> Date: Sunday, November 12, 2000 8:25 pm Subject: Re: WHITE BAY > Hi > > I could be wrong but the exact location of WHITE BAY is the start of > Victoria Road just pass the Anzac Bridge. Sorry I can't remember where, but it could have been somewhere in the south west like Canterbury or Bankstown or a bit further out. Try phoning a few local studies departments of libraries. It was possibly named after a person, so try the Australian Dictionary of Biography for the name Shepherd. Sorry I can't remember any better. 3. Hi Gang Sorry for the cross posting - announcing a new index on line. I have finally completed the online index for the Creswick papers for 1861 - I know there are problems with the 1859 & 1860 sites as some of the pages are a bit on the large size. I do plan to redo them, but I was half way through this lot and wanted to see how they loaded. My father-in-law, Charles Cecil Cave was appointed Lieutenant in the 'Active Citizen Military Forces of the Commonwealth' on 26 Sept 1930 under the seal of the then Governor General of Australia, Baron Stonehaven. Was this the regular army of Australia, or some kind of reserve force, say a territorial army reserve? I would be grateful if anyone can give an answer? Peter Bentley

Isabella's parents were William Spence, a soldier of the 71st Regiment and Ellen Down(e)s. He was stationed at Limerick, Ireland for a period of time. Ellen was baptised 1819 at Limerick. 3. Dear Friends My mother, who passed away on 1 June2000, lost her first unborn child at six months in 1940 in Melbourne. I never had the heart to ask about this when my sister and I were told when we were pre and early teens. To my regret I never asked about this later before she died. Apparently she was trying to free their pet dog who was caught in a broken fence and she was hit in the stomach by a paling. Does anyone know what the policy was then? Might this unborn child have been buried somewhere? If it makes any difference she may have been living in East Melbourne whilst her husband was at the war and her father was an Anglican minister. Is there a burial site? Would there be any records? Any information would be appreciated. 3. Would anyone be able to assist this gentleman from Queelsland. Thank you, Mary of Melbourne -----Original Message----- From: Jim Lowe <jlowdog@hotmail.com> Date: Thursday, 12 October 2000 15:40 Hi my name is Jim Lowe I live in Qld and I am trying to trace my family tree. My gggrandparents were John Valentine Lowe and Margaret Ferguson. Margaret is the daughter of John Blair Ferguson who was the first headmaster of the Free Church School in Templestowe around 1850. She married John Lowe in 1852 and they settled in the Doncaster, Templestowe, Durban Creek, Ivanhoe areas in the following years. I cannot trace the ancestors of this John Valentine Lowe except that he may have been born in Hobart in 1829 and he may have had a relative James Samuel Lowe born Tasmania 1827 who also married Isabella Maclaren in Melbourne in 1850. John Valentine Lowe was the leaseholder of a shop in Heidelberg in 1856. Would anyone know how I could possibly trace details of this shop and also would anyone have any details at all on the early Lowes of the area. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated as I have been at a standstill with my researching for some time. Thanks Jim jlowdog@hotmail.com

    3. Hello Glenn Saw your posting and as I have been doing the 1903 Gunnedah Polling lists for the AIGS Millenium Project I checked the data you gave against it. No WOOF or WINDER for that period but the name FOREMAN appears with Agnes (domestic duties) being mentioned twice and George (carter) once both of Gunndah. LOMAS does not appear on the list. Emerald Hill appears under the surname as follows: McDONALD Eldred Andes selector McDONALD Helena George boarding house keeper.
