    1. Thunderbolt
    2. Peter Wratten
    3. Calling all Listers, Just for a bit of interest I have decided to try to trace the descendant tree of one Frederick Ward (a.k.a. Thunderbolt). I think I know all the easy stuff but would be interested to hear from anyone who has already done any of this research. There were three children survived his death and it is highly likely that none of them continued on into adulthood with the surname Ward - most likely because of an official or unofficial adoption as their mother was also deceased. Any and all assistance gratefully received. Thank you, Peter Wratten. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. 1. Shepherd's Bush, Botany Bay.
    2. Andrew S. Wallace
    3. Hi All There was apparently a Shepherd's Bush in Sydney. Have a look at Banjo Patterson's poem "Uncle Bill", which is on-line. He talks about the gangs of Surrey Hills and Shepherd's Bush. I'd never heard of it before, I must admit. You learn something new every day. It must have been somewhere around Central Railway. Jean ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Hi. Just arrived on this List and saw the above message from Jean Pearce. Shepherd's Bush appears to have been in the Botany Bay area -- at least the area had a Shepherd's Bush Coursing Ground used for greyhound racing. This would tie in with Banjo's reference to "gangs" as they were a common feature at racecourses in the good old/bad old days (at least in the UK). The following is an extract from the City of Botany Bay site www.botanybay.nsw.gov.au/history.html under the heading "Sport and Entertainment". <<<The local love of racing extended to horses and greyhounds. The district was well served by racetracks. Ponies went through their paces at the Ascot and Rosebery Racecourses, while the Shepherd's Bush Coursing Ground held greyhound races. Later, motor bikes and planes took over from the horses and dogs. In the 1930s, bike riders, barnstormers and races organised by New South Wales Aero Club got top billing.>>> There is no date given for the Coursing Ground and no sign of it in my "Gregory" suburban maps, nor on the Whereis Street Atlas site at www.whereis.com.au/ "Uncle Bill" was penned in 1888 so we know the gang were operating prior to that date. We have a site in the UK which is very handy for old maps circa 1860, scale six inches to the mile. www.old-maps.co.uk/ Something similar covering Sydney and suburbs would probably give the answer ---- anything available ? Failing that, if SKS in Botany Bay could spare half an hour in the main library or made contact with the New South Wales Aero Club I'm sure an answer to the mystery could be found. Perhaps the tarmac at Sydney Airport (Kingsford-Smith) covers the old Coursing Ground. By the way, thanks for two magnificent Olympic Games. I'm now off to watch the Scotland v Australia football match tonight --- supporting both teams so I cannot lose! Regards, Andy (Dalgety Bay, Fife, Scotland)

    1. Family names Watts & Breeze
    2. glenn woof
    3. Good afternoon list, I am helping a non computer user to track down some family members. The family name we are searching are descendants of Francis (Frank) Watts and Charlotte Breeze. This couple were married in All Saints Church Parramatta on 25 June 1887. Any information regarding descendants or any other connections would be appreciated. Evidently in this line there was a tendency to call some of the males Francis or Frank with an occasional second name of Charles or George. This makes one feel like hitting their head on a wall. No doubt this is an afflication that most family tree searchers are prone to. Again, any information no matter how trivial, would be appreciated. If there is someone who has a direct link to this family, we are only too happy to share information. Thank you in advance Glenn gwoof@netspace.net.au

    2. Maureen Doyle
    3. Hi everyone, I thought I would put one last call out for anyone who knew or is related to Celia Madden or Nina Bugden. Celia was born in Port Dunblar in 1900 and died 1973, she married Michael O'Meara and they had four daughters and one son. The family lived in Young and then later Meadowbank but I know that they had relis in Queensland also. I believe they also had relatives in NSW country as well as Victoria. I know that Celia was related in some way with the Doyle family as well and that they had relations in Tully. I would really love to hear from anyone that has any information on any of the above. Best regards Maureen

    1. Re: Next of Kin
    2. jean pearce
    3. Hi Vin I believe you will find that,in a family, each spouse is next-of-kin to the other. The parents are next-of-kin to each child. If a spouse dies, the children become next-of-kin to the surviving parent. On the death of both parents all siblings are next-of-kin to one another. According to my Brittanica :- In law, the term "next of kin" is applied to the person or persons who, as being in the nearest degree of blood relationship to a person dying intestate, share, accordingly to degree in his personal estate. Maybe ..... William Shepherd had a grant in the Darlington area. He established a flower and fruit growing farm known as "Shepherd's Darling Nursery", possibly named in honour of Gov Darling, so the district came to be known as Darlington. It would have been fairly close to the first central station which was near Cleveland St in the 1850s. Some of the streets are named for his nursery - Shepherd St, Pine, Myrtle, Rose, Vine, and Ivy Streets. If Shepherd's Bush was in the inner Sydney belt, the Sydney City Archives would have information, mainly council records from about the 1860s to the 1940s. 3. Hello Vin, I have no 'qualifications' but my understanding is that ALL children would be the next of kin. We have no order of inheritance in Australia and all siblings are treated equally. If you read the order of inheritance if a person died interstate you will see that there is no preference to gender or seniority only relationships counts.
