Hello Vin, Not quite an answer to your question, but may be of interest. When claiming my father's Australian Army medals (unclaimed by him) I received a letter setting out the claimants in order of entitlement. Here I am, asking again. And I am fairly sure someone out there will answer, again. I have found 1 only photograph of my G G'fa, it is in rather poor condition, but good enough to see the features of his face, etc. He is wearing a jacket which looks to be very similar to the Salvation Army jacket. It has a stand up collar, is of a dark colour, and looks to have a light coloured S one one side of the collar. It was the S that caught my attention. The time frame is hard to account for accurately. There is a series of these photos, all of the lads appear to have been photographed before 1890, which is around the time he died, so it could not have been much later than that. And by the look of the youngest, he was a truly grown man with mature beard and bearing - he was under 1 yr when they arrived here in 1856, so I am guessing 1886 was probably the earliest. This offers a window of around 5 years - problem is they were all taken by different phographers, but look as if they were a set. Anyway, back to G G'fa. Can someone tell me if the Salvation Army was active in Ballarat around the time we are looking at? And if so, is there a particular officer I might contact who may have archive access? See - I knew someone would know....Hmmm. cheers, Nandina

Further Sources from "The Australian Senior" Vol 24, No 1 - October 2000 From "Remember When", a column on page 36: Olwen King Treasurer of the Dreadnought Society 7 Elliott Avenue Alstonville NSW 2477 Column states that Mrs King is happy to answer enquiries or provide information for anyone researching Dreadnought Boys. Mrs King referred to a register from Glen Innes which showed next of kin, and the place they went to from Glen Innes. The register also lists their last address before leaving from England. Further, the Dreadnought Association has published a book called "They Passed This Way" containing 60 personal stories of the boys who came to Australia and of the scheme itself. Mrs King is collecting more stories for a sequel and so far has 38 stories. Hope the above provides some useful directions for further research. Bryson Wilson in wet Pennant Hills
Hazel it's pretty hard to translate Latin into English just using a dictionary. I used to cope OK but it's more than 15 years ago. I used the "Ask Jeeves" search engine and typed in " Latin translation" and was directed to a 'Latin Online Translation" ( I have Ask Jeeves: on my site see URL after my signature) or you can go to http://www.quicklatin.com where you can download a shareware Latin translator susanna http://www.susannassoapbox.homestead.com > I am hoping someone in the Sydney or more precise Blacktown area maybe able to suggest a book shop where I maybe able to purchase a dictionary that translates Latin into English.
Does anyone have access to information from the Molong area. Maybe newspapers or records in the 1850's. Is there a historical society there? Joy Ferguson Sydney

Thanks to all those who replied to my query re Shepherds Bush. Part of the problem was my fault - I meant to ask about Shepherds Paddock instead. Thanks especially to k_connors@dingoblue.net.au who indicates that it is what is now called Paddington, Sydney. This matches well with my research Henry
