Hello all, recently Denice asked about the old area of Bathurst... In the 1820s there was an area known as Bathurst, "one of the original districts of Cumberland NSW; bounded bon the S by Prospect Hill and Melville districts, on the NW sides by the South Creek to the bridge, and on the NE side by the Windsor and Toongabbie Roads." From "A Geographical dictionary or gazettee of the Australian Colonies, 1848" by Wm Wells. Apparently there were several areas so named. Perhaps you could see if there are others which match your area best. However, today I checked at the Noel Butlin Archives Centre and found a property called Bogabigal or Bogabigail which is (or was) roughly between Eugowra and Grenfell. There are some formal reports about this property in the Goldsbrough Mort records at the NBAC. It appears on the wall maps of NSW pastoral stations which Robinson's published in the 1930s. Yes their is a book think you might have to make the same call for help I think on the Australia list. As I do not know if you are a member of that list I'll place a posting on it for you and hope that someone will be able to answer your question. Regards, Raymond Henderson. Hello Listers I'm new to the list and new to researching for information in Australia. My g.g. grandfather Thomas Connor (B:Oct.16,1842) was born to Thomas Connor and Mary Stewart, somewhere in Ireland and died in Jan. 1901, Minnesota, USA. In his obituaries it states that had been in Australia for several years and worked as a gold miner in an unknown location. I know that Thomas (Jr.) arrived in the US in 1869 so it does narrow down somewhat the yeas he could have left Ireland and been in Australia. If his obituary is in fact accurate is there any suggestions as to how I can get any information on Thomas (Jr.)? Knowing the present restrictive immigration policies were similar restrictions in place back then? Would someone coming into Australia be required to report to an agency to obtain work permits etc.? etc. I know there was a great gold rush in Australia but are the years that Thomas was there consistent with the years of the gold rush? Was the gold rush in a particular area of State of Australia? So many questions and no place to start. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated. Mike Connor Abbotsford, British Columbia Canada
Hi everyone I know I ask a lot of questions but I suppose that is the only way to learn how to do things. I have recently been researching my husbands family tree and have just found out that his grandmother (now deceased) was not the natural child of her so called parents. I believe that formal adoption did not start until 1929 and was wondering if you could tell me if fostering records prior to this exist. I do know that the person I am searching for (Ivy Mena) would have been born in or around 1914 and that she was fostered from an orphanage in South Melbourne (quite possibly catholic). Her foster parents were Arthur and Rose Andrews which was the surname she grew up with. I have heard a rumour that she had a brother with the name Barker or Baker. I have spent a bit of time researching the Andrews line as I had thought this was her biological family. Now it turns out that they are not so I am back where I began. I have absolutely no idea where to start with researching this situation so any direction anyone can point me in as far as records to search would be greatly appreciated. My Danish gtX2grandfather Johannes Carl KEMPF also went first to Queensland (1873), then he went to Victoria before ending up in NSW. His wife (Olavia Florentine nee Madsen) gave birth to their fifth daughter in Brisbane and died after the birth of the sixth in Victoria. His brother Ferdinand Kempf had emigrated to NSW a couple of years earlier and changed his name to Charles Campbell - he was one of the discoverers of copper at Cobar. Johannes Carl sometimes called himself John Campbell. One of Johannes Carl's gtgrandmothers was Maren BRUUN - I wonder whether the surnames BRUHN and BRUUN are interchangeable. I shall ask on the Denmark Rootsweb List. For anyone interested, the Rootsweb DK-List is fantastic. Happy Christmas from wet but mild London, Karen
I was wondering if some kind person with a little bit of spare time could look up a DEATH notice in the Sydney Morning Herald for me as I live in the country and have no access to such records. The death of Denis Anthony PARNELL (died 16 January 1995) appeared in the Herald on 18 January 1995. Many thanks in anticipation. Bernie. doylie@westserv.net.au
Hi All, Many thanks to the people who answered my original query. The answer appears to be *Queensland*, then Sydney - and the key was in the Danish Emigration Archive. (I at first thought Anita would have checked it - then decided to double-check, just to make sure). Here is the message I've just posted to <dk.historie.genealogi>: Hej Anita, Maybe Ă˜dis, Vejle Amt? Think you need to know how all this works. As you have posted a public message to the list. All postings come from roots web, and as a list administrator we only get copies of what you get as well the only thing we are able to do is to monitor the list and it's members but what comes from rootsweb is way beyond our control. Dear List Administrator, At the moment my virus protection is working overtime. Do you not have one on your computer? It should stop messages (or attachments) with virus in them from getting through by quarantining them. If not, may I respectfully suggest that you do purchase one - they are worth their weight in gold. Noelle Oke ALBURY NSW

Hi listers, Does any one know of a site for photos of the above areas about 1870 ish please? Or books with photos or these areas, also anxious to obtain photos of the Peel River diggings, including the Happy Valley area and Oakenville Creek. Or would they have photos they are willing to scan and send? I have the book Hills of Gold which contains some photos but the quality is too poor for reproduction. Hello All With the risk of starting some brisk discussion about Genealogy software programs, here's my two bobs worth. I know everyone has their favourite program, ours is Family Origins. Have tried Family Tree Maker and others but find Family Origins outstanding. I am not bagging other programs but for price and ease of use we think Family Origins wins hands down, it's less than half the price of FTM.
