    3. Dear Julie, yes moving on is all you can do. Same thing happened to me. We all think that it can't (won't). Returned from overseas in early August, No 1 son informed that a faulty CD Rom was to blame. Lost nearly 18 months worth of e-mails. Just days prior to going on holiday had found vital information and all was lost! Thank God, I have a very good memory and remembered the vitals. The hardest thing to come to terms with was the loss of my address book, genealogy and private. I know keep them separate, although it is sometimes hard to define, and BACK up my address book every week. If you have that you can start again. I know this may be no consolation at this time, but time heals. Regards, Anne, Melbourne. 3. garry I am well aware that HMS Hood was not Australian . Neither were the ancestors of 90+ % of all people living in Australia. A lot of English Migrants may well have information, Photographs etc which could enhance the proposed site. On your system if someone starts a site for HMAS Perth then people outside Australia should not be told of it or asked to contribute. Sorry mate but I believe ALL good Genealogy is valid , I specifically asked replies be off list to prevent clogging this list up.But I stand by my decision to pass it on for the benefit of any who may have lost relations on the HMS Hood. 1. Gedcom files
    2. Jeanette Dixon
    3. Just a reminder to people placing their gedcom files onto the internet, to privatise the information about living people. This can be done wuitge easily with appropriate software. You might not mind your information going onto the net, but Aunty Jo mightn't want everyone to know that she was unmarried, and cousin Mary mightn't want everyone to know that she is illegitimate. Also unscrupulous people might decide to use the information to obtain false identities. Who knows who is going to access the information once it's on the net. Cheers. 1. New List for NORTHWEST
    2. Beryl O'Gorman
    3. Hello Everyone This message is to announce a new list to cover yet another area of Victoria. Called AUS-VIC-NORTHWEST it will cover the area north of the Western Highway through the Wimmera and Mallee to the Murray border. I'm sure there are lots of you out there who have ancestry in this part of Vic. I have several Wimmera families whose names I will put up. This List excludes Maryborough and the area within the Golden Triangle, which is covered by the GOLDFIELDS List. Looking at the area covered by the NORTHEAST List, the Eastern boundary goes as far as the towns of Echuca, Rochester, Elmore and Goornong. As Horsham, Stawell and Ararat are technically in the Wimmera they will go in this list also. No matter how hard we try there will be some fuzziness between Lists. If in doubt about borders, why not join both lists? So if you think this is your area, go for it. Subscribing info below. Greetings to all for a calm and peaceful Christmas and great finds in the New Year Beryl O'Gorman List Admin To subscribe in Mail Mode just send the command "subscribe" to AUS-VIC-NORTHWEST-L-request@rootsweb.com. To subscribe in Digest (several messages together), send the command "subscribe" to AUS-VIC-NORTHWEST-D-request@rootsweb.com to start receiving digests. 4. How to change to NOMAIL mode. There is no formal NOMAIL mode. All you have to do is follow the directions above and unsubscribe when you want the messages to stop, and then when you want them to start again, simply subscribe again. 5. If you'd like to post a message so everyone on the mailing list receives it, just send it to AUS-VIC-NORTHWEST-L@rootsweb.com. It will then be sent on to everyone in both mail and digest mode. You don't need to send it explicitly to both. 6. To contact the administrator of this mailing list, send mail to AUS-VIC-NORTHWEST-admin@rootsweb.com.

    3. Dear Fellow Genealogists, I haven't been on lately due to the crash of my computer :-( in which I lost all of my emails, some new family information that I had recently found and hadn't backed up and also information that people sent into me for the Tracking our Family Footsteps in Time throughout Australia website :-( I sincerely apologise to those who's information was lost. However, those of you that sent information to the hotmail address, their information was saved :-). 1. online German Gazetteer
    2. Kay McCullough
    3. Dear list, I have found this link in my travels and it is absolutely brilliant if you are trying to find places in Prussia around the 1870's. The maps are the most detailed I have seen and print out beautifully. Through this site I was able to locate some obscure towns I had only seen references to on passenger lists. The link is: http://www.library.wisc.edu/etext/ravenstein/ You need to download the index file for the part of the alphabet you are interested in. From that locate the map number and grid reference. Then download the correct map (they are quite big files) and when it is downloaded, open it and find the correct section from the grid reference. It is quite a time consuming exercise, but well worth the effort! Have fun, and merry Christmas, Kay

    1. Carr/Frears - anywhere
    2. glenn woof
    3. Good morning list, I am going out on a branch for my cousin and am looking for some information regarding his grandparents. The person we are looking for is Robert Cecil CARR (details unknown - hence the posting). We do know he married Helen Edith FREARS in 1898 in Northam WA. Helen was born in Ballarat, Vic in 1875. Her parents were Joseph FREARS and Helen PHILLIPS. Robert 's occupation (whatever it was) evidently took him around Australia as their seven children were born in different places. Bernice (1899- Perth), Cyril (1902 - Coolgardie), Gwendolin (1904 - Kalgoolie), Ronald (1908 - Maitland), William (1911-Wingham), Daphne (1914-Macksville), Enid (1918 - Tenterfield). What we are looking for is some information regarding Robert Cecil CARR. Does anyone know him or anything about him. We do not know where he was born, his parents or his occupation. Any help at all would be appreciated. Glenn gwoof@netspace.net.au
