    1. CAULFIELD HOSPITAL
    2. Linda Smith
    3. Hello Listers I was wondering if anyone on the list knows where the records for Caulfield hospital (Melbourne) would be kept. My grandfather (FRANK PITHOUSE) served with the Australian army in the first world war and from his diary I know he was hospitalised just before the end of the war and on and off just after. I know he was wounded but I don't have many details. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you Linda Essex England

    1. Bailey - MacDonald Valley
    2. Donna Williams
    3. Hi, I am interested in a family of the MacDonald Valley (near the Hawkesburry). Five BAILEY sons married 5 Fernance Daughters. The ancestor William Bailey arrived on the Matilda in 1791 at the age of 35. Does anyone know of his ancestory. My English Grandfather, Frank Bailey, came to Australia in the early 1900's & settled near Ballina, where he had an aunt. There was (& still is) a Fernance family in the area. My Grandfather told my father that he was distantly related to the Fernances. My Bailey's are from Wisbech, Norfolk. I would like to trace the connection. Cheers, Donna. 2. To all Listers I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all so much for the private and list emails that I have received since Mr Garry Wilson replied via the list to an email I sent out asking for help. Your encouragement and support certainly makes me glad that I decided to stay on this list. I am learning so much from other peoples' questions and the replies that are sent on the list to these people. I love the idea of a FAQ being published on the list and also the greatest help to newbies would be a list of acromyn's and what they stand for. I recently received some from Marg Morters when I sent her an email asking about one that she had put into an email and was given a list of quite a few.. Once again my sincere thanks to everyone and I will continue to ask questions and help from all on these great lists. 1. Medal Help - VJFRA
    2. Bill & Terri van Lamoen
    3. Hi All I need help to identify a silver medal from 1893. It is multi point star shaped with a victory wreath on one side. The other side has the inscription VJFRFA Premiers, Cumberland, 1893, Presented to J Allen. The medal is larger than a 50cent coin and was originally fitted with a brooch pin. John was born in New Zealand, returned to Victoria when his father died (1883) and married in Melbourne in June 1896. John Allen would have been aged 20 in 1893. Does anyone know what VJFRA might stand for OR has anyone seen a similar medal? Can anyone recommend a business or "medal expert" in Sydney that may be able to help me solve this puzzle. We are visiting Sydney next month so I could bring it over for identification. All suggestions appreciated. In the early days stillborn children's births were not recorded as legally they had not been born. Regards, Ray Wigraft Melbourne Australia

    1. Catherine Butler and John Harvey
    2. Good evening all, It has been over a year since I posted my same query but I thought I'd try again. My great grandmother was born in 1862, supposedly, in Steiglitz in Victoria, and yet I an find no record of her birth. I have the Pioneers Index (if only my CD drive would work) and she is not there. I have also requested a certificate and paid for a failure which is very frustrating. Her marriage certificate says that her parents were John Butler and Sarah Grant but her death certificate says her Dad was John Collins and mother, Sarah, nothing else. Grrrrrr Fred Waller was a great help to me about the history of Steiglitz and his friend, Gary Luke gave me the contact. They think that Catherine was simply not registered but I am wondering if there are Church records I could consult. Catherine was married to John Thomas Harvey, my Dad's grandpa. There was a child who died in a well in the 1860's in Steiglitz with the surname of Harvey, so should I get the inquest details? Any help and advice appreciated. 3. Hi List Thought I would post (see if any connections or have this couple in their tree - you never know) that I have a Mary Ann Webb in my tree (Right at the top of my KELLY Tree) and she is an convict. I have been looking through all Convict sites all day. I don't know much about Mary Ann Webb but do know she married Thomas Kelly on the 9 Oct 1826 in Windsor, NSW. Then had 9 children from 1827 to 1856. All born around Sydney but to Braidwood and Coura Creek where ever that is!!! 1. Re: Army records
    2. E. A. Roberts
    3. Cathy was asking about army records At the Mitchell Library Sydney and probably some other libraries in Aust. there are PRO micro films ( Public Record Office London) In this collection are the pay list for the army regiments that were station in Australian and NZ. It is slow and tedious work but if you have a date in Aust where his occuption is listed as Army sgt. Check in books like' the Dress and Insignia of the British Army in Australia and NZ' by Ronald Montague or 'The Remote Garrison the British Garrison in Australia' for which regiments were in Australia at that time. The instruction on how to use the PRO Army paylist also lists where the regiments were. Having worked out the likely regiments check the PRO lists for the likely Micro films then start looking , it is not a quick hit job. I have been doing some work on these reels in this period recently many are quite difficult to read and you need to make sure you are looking at paylists for the regiment in Australia or where even and not in the UK many regiments sent only part to Australia or sent it out over time. All the paylists for all sections of regiment where ever are all jumbled up. Elizabeth A. Roberts N.S.W. Genealogical and Historical Research Wahroonga NSW
