Hello listers, Could someone who has access to SA Marriages look up a marriage between Leonard Vernon HARMER and Margaretha Hilda Veleska LEHMANN, probably in Adelaide. I'm not sure of the date but their first child was born in 1929. Thanks for your help. Robyn Kelly Echuca, Victoria rrkelly@origin.net.au

Good Evening List, I have just received a copy of the marriage certificate of my uncle - Robert Cecil CARR who married Helen Edith FREARS on the 9th October 1898. I am trying to go back in the tree of Ronald Cecil. On the certificate it lists his father as William K... Carr (I cannot decipher the actual name) and mother as Leah? G....(again I cannot decipher the writing). Is there anyone on the list who is researching this union. I know that there were at least six or seven children born in WA and NSW. I have most of the details of the children it is going backwards that I am interested in. Can anyone help??? If there is anyone researching this family, I am more than happy to provide the descendants of their son Ronald Cecil CARR. Thanks Glenn gwoof@netspace.net.au
Hi Inquests could be held anywhere - the inquest on one of our relatives was held in the nearest pub just after the drowning! Inquest documents are held at the state Public Record Office. You would have to contact them to find out how they are organised. In Victoria there is a reading room in the offices at Casselton Place but most documents have to be ordered in from the Archives. Access to them is quite easy here in Victoria. To find something in the papers contact your State Library newspaper room and ask what they would suggest. Their holdings are likely to be much more extensive than you would imagine. As which paper would have covered that area at that time. It is hard to know if he would have made the news in one of the major newspapers but local ones were very comprehensive. Hello List, Happy New Year to you all, I received an obituary from the paper that says: "A member of the Gallipoli Legion, Mr Alexander Archibald McLean died at his home at Tanglewood, Armidale yesterday...... He was a member of the 1st Australian Light Horse and saw service in World War 1 at Gallipoli." Is the "Gallipoli Legion" a special thing - or does it just mean he served in Gallipoli and the bit in the paper was a newspaperman's licence. Regards, Debbi - in Dubai

Subject: Re:- Light Houses > Hi List, > > Can anyone tell me a web site where I may find history on the LightHouse at Cape Schank Victoria (when built and Light house Keepers etc). Responsibility for lighthouses was passed from the states to the commonwealth in 1915, and most of the paperwork went eventually to Australian Archives, who have produced a book "Lighthouses in Australia " a Guide to Records held by Aust Archives published Sept 1991 A book:" From Dusk to Dawn: a History of Australian Lighthouse " by G Reid, Dept of Transport & Communications/Macmillan 1988 The earliest personnel records are 1883, so not much use to you. > > Just found out my ggrandmother was born at Cape Schank 1847, Sorry I did not read this first 1847! Cape Otway and the Williamstown "Gellibrand's Point Light" were built in 1848, and were the first Victorian lighthouses. I know Cape Schank light was still being debated in 1856, so definitely nothing there in 1847. >but I am wondering what would have been there other than perhaps the lighthouse back then. As there is not a lot there to-day. Have asked at local library but no book to tell me. Thank you for any help. If she was born at sea at this point would it have been place of birth Cape Schank or born at sea? Usually "born at sea" but usually in the log book the latitude would be given. Perhaps they were hoping to claim "Australian born" for citizenship for the child. Regards, Ada
I am searching for information on the above families - McClelland from Co. Armagh, and descendants of same. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Maureen
A family rumour has cropped up about possible relatives in Melbourne surnamed CAVALIER. Would anyone be able to do a quick lookup for the name - possibly a Fred Cavalier who would have been an adult in the 1950s. Of extreme interest would be any marriages between a SYMONS/SIMMONS woman and a CAVALIER about 1850-1870. Thanks for any help. Colleen My gggfather has the same address as yours !! He also had an inquest which I could not find officially. BUT . . . at the State Library in Macquarie St. Sydney I looked up the Goulburn papers and there in the last column was a full (marvellous stuff) report of the inquest which was held in the local hotel. Even said - he wais to his wife that he was glad he did not need to take the engine out first thing in the morning (he was an engine driver on the railway) and that his wife gave him some gruel with brandy when he was going to bed not feeling well the previous evening and when she checked him at 9 p.m. he was dead. - It really made them very much *alive* to me. Be prepared to read the papers from column to column - there were few headlines very very small print and few paragraphs. Could take a while to locate. Maybe a packed lunch would be the go!! Very good luck to you Mary-Anne -----Original Message----- From: phil walker [mailto:pcwalker@ozemail.com.au] Sent: Tuesday, 9 January 2001 13:24 To: AUSTRALIA-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Goulburn christmas day drowning I have a ggg -Alexander CAMPBELL who drowned on 25 December 1846 - he is buried at Mortis St Old Cemerty Goulburn (no headstone) and is late of Frogs Hole. Interesting he drowned and was buried on the same day - what were the newspapers around at that time and how could I 'look up' to see if he rated a mention? with many thanks Colleen Central Coast ______________________________
