Hi Joy, Short answer is no. Pre-1856 in NSW they are not *birth* certificates, but Baptism certificates. They show very little info - Name, date of birth, date of baptism, parents' names & abode, Parish, Denomination, Minister's name and sponsors' names. There is a space for father's occupation but none of mine have ever shown it. Also, I think the Registrar's records pre-civil registration (1856) were taken from the parish records, so BDM couldn't have anything that wasn't in the parish record. Can you not find any records for this family after 1856? Those certificates would help you a lot more. Janelle Cust has recently published a history of the family of her German born ancestor Johann Christopher Pabst. Pabst arrived in Sydney in 1826 as an employeee of the Australian Agricultural Company. After his contract expire he married and moved to what is now Holbrook and bought the Woolpack Inn in 1840 and it became known as"the German's" and the village became Germanton. Although primarily a family history, a secondary focus of this book is the development of Germanton from its European beginnings in 1838 until it was renamed Holbrook in 1815. The book's title is: "The Pabst Family and Germanton Remembered" ISBN 0-646-40793-7. Ann Prendergast, Sydney Ann Prendergast anniep@fl.net.au

No - not the Algerian King - but a ship that arrived in Port Phillip in 1857 carrying some of my husband's ancestors. I have looked in the Log of Logs but can't find it and you get some very weird suggestions when you enter this into a search engine! Has anyone heard of this ship? I'd love to know more. Best wishes Angela

While on a short trip to Sydney I found two references to my gggrandfather in the AGCI in the State Library. They are as follows: 1. McKay James 1842 Birth Biographical Dictionary NSAG 1842 P.287 2. McKay James 1864 Professional Biographical Dictionary NSAG J9/1/2 page 296. I know the source of the first reference which is the Pioneers of Fiji Cyclopedia published in 1907 but the page reference for No2. is not in the Cyclopedia. I contacted SAG but their charge for research amounts to over $30. All I really want to know is where would I find the Professional Biographical Dictionary mentioned. I Know that James Martin McKay left Sydney in 1864 to pursue a shipbuilding career in Fiji. Is there sks who can advise me on how I can find this reference source. TIA Joy Bruce in Queensland
Can sks please advise me whether a birth certificate issued in 1842 will contain any more information than that found on the parish record of baptism. On the parish film I obtained the following information: Father: William Robert McKay, shipbuilder of George Street, Sydney Mother: Mary Ann Parish of St. Lawrence, Sydney, Date of birth: 6th June 1847 Grafton NSW Date of Baptism: 25th December 1842 Sydney The father is proving extremely difficult to research and I am wondering if the birth certificate will give me any more information. Hopefully, Joy Bruce in Queensland.

Hello Listers I have just heard from a cousin in Scotland that one of our rellies migrated to Australia in the mid-late 1800s. He was John McCALL b.1825 s/o Alexander McCALL and Elizabeth TWININGHAM and married to Agnes FINDLAY. I have a record of one daughter born to him in Scotland - Elizabeth Twiningham McCALL in 1859. All this happened in Ayrshire. It is thought possible that a John McCALL who went later to Glasgow University from Tasmania could be his son. I would be grateful if anyone could point me in the right direction to find some of these. Elizabeth Twiningham McCALL may be the easiest with such a distinctive middle name. Any bells ringing anyone? Cheers. Pam robinspm@fan.net.au Beaudesert, Queensland, Australia

Folks Need some help I am trying to research a HUGHES family who lived in Tasmania some time betwen 1827 and 1842. They appear to have had a number of children. The ancestor in particular that I am searching for is William Henry Hughes, said to have been born on 9 Oct 1827, but no record can be found in the indexes. The father is a curious story. He is supposed to be WILLIAM HUGHES and the mother Anne McCoy. However, looking in the BDM and the Tasmania Family Link pages, the family is shown as having a Mary, Catherina, Franciscus, James and John. The story gets curious when you find that the father for Catherina and Franciscus is shown not as William but Gullielmo or Gullielmi (Spanish for William I believe) A marriage certificate listed William Hughes (the father) as a ships captain. I am told he was a shipbuilder. His son William Henry ended up in NSW and had a very large family. He is even supposed to have been baptised in 1828 in Sydney. My questions are: - anyone heard of this fellow or family ? - anyone know of how someone came to have a name Gullielmo in Tasmnania ? - anyone know who is responsible for makeing the "connections" in the Family Link web pages. - anyone point in the direction of what I can do next ? thanks in advance henry
Good evening group I hav just been speaking with a cousin who now tells me he has many medals of our great grandfather, one of which is to do with the Exhibition of 1880 in Melbourne. This medal has "a woman with a funny hat on one side and on the other some wording and H.A.Crawford Juror". Can anyone explain what this medal is and what position a "Juror" was for the Exhibition? If there is a web site I'd appreciate the URL also. Just like a cousin isn't it. I've been speaking frequently with him asking him if he has anything else on gg, and always "nothing else nothing else" is the reply, then tonight he tells me he has all this. AFTER the book has been printed. I'm in Brisbane and he's in Melbourne, so that makes him extremely lucky! regards Denise ###################################### Denise Marriott McMahon - ex Melbourne 21 years Brisbane Queensland - Searching - CONWAY - County Clare and N.E. But wait! There's more! I have a Rawleigh's fly sprayer. It has the sun's rays on it. It is black and yellow. You put the Rawliegh's fly spray in the tank at the front, then pumped away to give those flies the flick! Only Australians will recognize the pun in the last phrase.
