G'day from W.A. Do not want to be involved in Flame session, BUT, Tales have I never seen you passing on information to help other people ?? I'm sure I have ! I think it is all a matter of everyone trying to be realistic about things. If you buy a book of anything it is yours and you can freely legally swap it sell it give it away. So why should a CD copy of it be any different ? You are getting very excited about someone swapping ,(the person Never suggested Hiring or selling them ) CDs , but would I am sure happily condone the passing on of Books, or of information from them. I appreciate that most makers of CDs would like to prevent anyone learning anything without paying them something first, but feel we should bear in mind the tireless efforts of the volunteers that make a lot of the information available for them to make CDs from. Regularly on a lot of lists we see how firms have taken peoples trees and put them onto CD without even saying Thanks, without any permission. Perhaps we as Genealogists( However amateur or professional we are) should be saving our indignation at "Theft" for those firms. I have nil Genealogy CDs , for simple reason I cannot afford them and I am sure there are many others out there in the same state.I suppose we should all 'fold up our tents and give up??' No I for one won't give up, I'll rely on help from other nice Human beings on this and other lists , and will in return help them whenever I can. I dearly want to search the 1901 Census from England but at the prices being quoted at present , I will not be able to do so,but I'll get around it somehow to trace my elusive ancestors. So anybody knowing of any CUSICK family that wish to help me , feel free to do so direct to dsmcusick@bigfoot.com My Fgandparents were in Haggerston in 1881 Census but moved on to Tottenham later. Incidentally I read a couple of days ago of a guy in UK that is just finishing off a double CD of Gloucester Churches and Monumental Inscriptions pre 1786 from a book he bought for 500 UKP to sell at 20UKP a very reasonable price especially as he is donating the book to a museum for all to see. http://www.archivecdbooks.com is the URL to visit if you are interested. Is anyone connected with the TAPP family from Bromley, Kent.? They arrived in Australia in the 1850's and settled in NSW. His name was Frank TAPP and her name was Mary Ann DENNING ( born in the colony c.1795.) Caroline. doylie@westserv.com.au
Hi all, I recently found reference to my GGGrandmother being a teacher at the one teacher Victorian government school of Doroq. She was originally appointed in March, 1879 and was still there in 1884/5. From the internet I have found the Doroq postcode of 3321. However I cannot find Doroq. It is not in my Victorian atlas and was not in an 1864 Victorian Gazateer. The nearest postcode that I have found is Edenhope, 3319. This implies that Doroq may be, (may have been) over near the SA border in the Wimmera region of Victoria. Does anyone know anything of the history of Doroq &/or the Doroq school? Bill Lord Wattle Glen
Dear Mr Talbot, If you read my mail carefully you will discover that I was not looking for a highest or lowest bidder, but simply offering to lend out my resources that I paid for legally through Macbeth Genealogy in exchange for the loan of CD's I do not have. I am a teacher and I loathe cheating in any form and have never been accused of this before, possibly because I am honest and an upstanding person. You have crossed the line and I will not accept your comments as justifiable. Lisa Schreurs
Good evening to everyone, I am not sure what you think about this idea but I would like to lend and borrow CD's rather than have to fork out extra dollars if there are willing people. I have the Pioneers Index, Between the Wars, The Australian Vital Records and the English ones (lent out at the moment) but I don't have the Federation Index or the Inquests in Victoria and would happily swap for a few weeks. I don't imagine that this is illegal and I have no CD burner and would not consider copying borrowed CD's. I am interested in your thoughts on this. Lisa Schreurs Clyde, Victoria

I have been approached by the Rev Ted Curnow asking me if I can assist the Burton Cemetery Trust (in Sth Aust) with information on Sarah HART, died 5 Feb 1889, married to George Hart Others in the Burton cemetery are: Robert Shedrick Hart, died 13 June 1873, son of the above George Henry Hart, died 20 April 1874, son of the above Florence Harriet Hart, died 25 Dec 1876, daughter of Sarah and George The family lived at TWO WELLS/GAWLER PLAINS and are buried in the Burton Cemetery which is adjacent to the Burton Primitive Methodist Chapel, built in 1854, with the first recorded burial being in 1866, although it could have been used prior to that date. Burton is near Salisbury. If anyone is related to this family, Rev Curnow would love to hear from you as they are seeking information on the family background - where the family settled, circumstances of death, family interests etc to put alongside similar stories of people buried at Burton. Already they have a number of family histories of those buried there. Please respond directly to me if you are related to the above HARTs and I will forward Rev Curnow's address to you. Can sks please advise me whether a birth certificate issued in 1842 will > contain any more information than that found on the parish record of > baptism NO. All certificates pre 1856 are transcribed from the parish registers, sometimes there is more information in the parish registars than in the certificates as unnecessary information was not transcribed. Civil registration started in NSW in 1856

Ottawa. Robyn, I'm browsing through "Sydney &The Bush " a pictorial history of education in N.S.W.to try and find your answers. This was written to commemmorate the Centenary of the N.S.W. Dept. of Education in 1880. Under The Public Instruction Act 1880 children were required to attend school for 140 days each year. Exemptions and inadequate enforcement made compulsory education largely ineffective. No mention of ages but it appears to be mainly up to teenage years.Very little Secondary education. Up until 1848 there doesn't appear to be any government education. From then there were 5 systems of schools, four denominatioal and one government i.e public schools. As far as the earliest records go there is information in the book about dame schools begun within 2 years of settlement. The colony's 1st dame school teachers were convicted petty pilferers. The whole establishment was a government one so there are sure to be records bound in red tape about most of the schools if only one knew where. I don't know the leaving age but child teachers could start at 13. In 1868 of 1 014 teachers, 165 were pupil teachers. Teacher training was extended to 3 months in 1867. I won't bore listers with more. Let me know if I can help any further. David in Gosford.
